I would leave them in a 5 gal bucket with bleach for 5 days. They can out clean then would soke in Seachem prime for a day and then air dry for a couple of days before using them. Had no problems.

You shouldn't have that sock on the end of your drain like that. When it plugs up, your tank could overflow. Your sump has a holder for a sock already.

Don't use filter socks anymore. But I would just throw them in the washer with bleach. Use after they dried. Was I doing it wrong all this time?

I just turn them inside out. Shoot them with the garden hose. Seems to get them pretty clean. Let them dry and there ready to go. I was going to put them in the washing machine but I'm kinda worried about what they might pick up.

I just put it in the washer with a cap full of bleach under hot water. I wash it again the second time without bleach and air dry them.

I think filter socks get a bad name because people get lazy and don't change them. I do mine every three or four days. I think the only down side is that if you have a skimmer you're keeping stuff in the water column that could get removed by the skimmer. But when you change the sock it removes it anyways.

I run an empty load with bleach. Then run a load of socks with bleach. I then run a extra rinse cycle or two. Let them dry completely. Bleach evaporates. Haven't had a problem yet.

I do smell check them after being dry. Any sent of bleach and I rinse with ro before going in the tank.

Wash them in hot water with oxygen bleach, like Oxyclean, which is granulated hydrogen peroxide. Rinse them twice and put out in the sun to dry. Not too much oxygen bleach a little goes a long way and it will disinfect your sox without leaving any harmful residue.

I wash 5-7 socks in hot water with a capful of bleach on heavy cycle with a double rinse. Following that I rinse them in rodi water 2-3 times in a 5 gallon bucket, have been doing in for over a year without any issues.

Edit: If you're worried about the bleach just do the hot water heavy cycle with double rinse, get's them pretty clean.

I do what java jacket said. Just run them in the washer without adding anything. Gets them looking new again. I change them ever 3-5 days. I have had them shred up in the washer before so make sure you buy quality ones the first time. The ones that shredded were cheapos from my lfs.

Cap of bleach and hot water make them look like new then air dry in the sun for 24 hours like everyone said. I wouldnt recommend going the cheap route on the socks either cause I tried those and the material wears out way faster then the brs socks.
