Always ran carbon thru reactor next to skimmer.
Do to space have had carbon, phosban reactors off line for maybe a year or so. I reconnected them both 2 weeks ago and notice alagae bloom(light brown film) every where.
Today noticed yellow tang has lld/hlle idk .
Wondering what everyone does with or without carbon and short reason of why?

I have always used carbon and never had my fish have hlle. I use half the recommend amount which is 1/2 a cup per 100 gallons. I use half of that. Depending on the carbon some release po4 so that could be why you have a little algea spit up. Hth

I run carbon and gfo through a mixed bed reactor, but very conservatively. I will run GFO periodically to knock down spikes in Phosphates as needed. Carbon for water clarity and hopefully to help filter contaminants from building up in the water between water changes. Also I'm trying my hand at a mixed reef and I'm hoping that the Carbon may help with things such as chemical warfare inside a closed loop environment.
