Do you change out GFO routinly (like every 3 months) or do you change it out as needed (like if you start to see cyano)?

I used to measure the amount and test every month till I would see my po4 move up. Then after I would change it around the same time. That would be every 1.5 months. That way my po4 washer stable and less algae issues. Why do you want to wait it see algae? You want to prevent it and the GDP last longer when not having to pull as much at once.

When I used it in the past, 3 weeks was the sweet spot for me, but from the replies above it looks as though its all a matter of conditions tank size, feeding, etc...
I thought your biopellets were helping with the PO4 issue????

3 weeks but I went 4 and I have nasty algae. I think my Lil one has been feeding the fishys via the auto feeder button. Put it this way, I loaded a 12-15 day supply, it was gone two days later.

At least she had a good time doing it.

So I stopped being lazy with my 30g at work and finally changed out the GFO.
