Tonight I was given a 1/4 hp chiller. From what I was told, the lights come on, but no compressor. I haven't plugged it in myself yet. But I am wondering if I would be able to get it fixed. Is there a location near me (La Mirada)?

Thanks in advance!

Jose, its a JBJ Arctica.

Just as a FYI, no compressor, display comes on. Its not the fuse, if you remove the fuse, the display doesn't come on. Sounds like it might be the compressor.

Could be the temp probe those are common to fail have you filled it with water and done a static check to see if the cooling light turns on? If so and compressor doesnt turn on than def bad comp! If no light then may be the temp probe

The light comes one and flashes. This is simply by plugging it in and turning the temp down to 67 deg. room temp is 71.8. First thing I noticed was the green light flashing.

I have a 1/4 HP JBJ Arctica with the samething happening, I hired my friend at $30 to chech it out and found out it was the contoler box. Even though the light was blinking and then turned on it wasnt telling the compressor to turn on. So I'm selling mine at $100. I found the control box online at $135

Just got off the phone with JBJ, if it is in fact the compressor, it cannot be repaired. They will not replace the compressor either. I have a cousin who works in hvac. I will have him look at it and see if it's the compressor. If he deems that it's not the compressor, I will take it to JBJ for them to diagnose. It's $40 for troubleshooting.

If it is the controller, you could always just bypass the controller and wire it up so it is always on. Then, just run it off of a Ranco temp controller, or you could even run it off an Apex, provided that you put it on one of the relay outlets, as they are rated up to 8A, and at 1/4hp, your chiller is probably pulling close to 7A or maybe a little more.

**Update**
So I actually dug a little more to find a reason why it wasn't working. I figured, I have an engineering degree, let's put it to good use. So I plugged it in and started checking the relay, fan, compressor. Everything seemed as though it should be working. I cleaned some contacts, reconnected them, and the chiller came alive. I ran it with a pump and set the temp to 60 degrees. I had it recirculating the same water into a bucket. It went from 90 degrees to 60 degrees in about 15-20 min. The chiller is working great. After I get back from AZ, I'm going to clean out the part where the water goes through. Any advice on what to put through it? Vinegar?

Vinegar/water mix should be fine. That's how I cleaned both of my chillers and they work great! I was also reading that some people, when draining the chiller not cleaning it, turn it upside down to get out all the crud that has built up in the piping over time. I didn't do that, but when I was running the vinegar/water through the chillers, both tossed out a bunch of crap. So maybe next time ill give that a shot.
