Female leopard wrasse
Flame hawk
Watchman goby
I like anthias especially the expensive ones.
Go on live aquaria and blue zoo and check their lists and we can help with ideas.
All depends in type of coral you're gonna have.

Please do not put a tang in the tank! Or a angle! Tang police need to be on your A** Omar.

It's debatable for sure but I think bristletooths like the Kole are ok as long as the 40 isn't overcrowded. Also most Centropyge angels are rated for tan30 gal tanks so he should be fine. But for sure be very careful what you choose and know some fish although purchased small can grow very fast.

My suggestion would be to get a yellow canary wrasse or a similar purple and yellow wrasse, same genus different species. Great color, always foraging for pests, really a win win fish.

for a 40 gallon size tank and space taken by the ls and lr, how many fish should one have?
It's more about bioload than count really. Like you could have 10 really small fish that produce the same bioload as 1 big fish. And you could have 2 fish that are the same size but one poops more or is dirtier than the other and therefore requires a system that can handle that.

Add to this that fish have other requirements beyond the nitrate cycle...for example, bioload-wise a tang would be fine in a 20g alone. But that would be a terrible thing to do because they need more space to swim. Or your bioload and space might be a perfect match for two fish but because one is passive and the other aggressive they can't coexist.

Bottom line is that there is a lot of right answers and a lot of wrong answers. Research each fish species you want and look for those factors: bioload, environmental needs, and compatibility with other tank-mates. Then decide from there. There just isn't one answer to this question.

I have a blue and pink spot goby and tiger pistol shrimp pair. I do like the wrasses but which ones are reef safe? Corriss (sp?) wrasses ok? I almost bought a dwarf pygmy angel the other day, was super cool looking and only about 1 1/2" long..but I decided id wait and read up about them first

No those aren't reef safe and they get large will eat your inverts etc.. People call a yellow canary wrasse a yellow coris wrasse but in fact its not in the same genus as a red coris.

Good chance it will pick on your corals so I would advise against the pygmy angel.
