I can do that, so just cover them with vinegar to kill everything? How long do you let them sit? I'm assuming you have to do a good rinse after that before putting them back in the tank?

Also can't you put the rock in the oven?

I don't know how long they'd have to sit to kill everything, but I don't imagine things that are designed for saltwater would survive a day in pure vinegar? Yes, you should probably rinse them before readding them :p

Putting them in the oven is the same risk as boiling them. Trapped water and air inside the rock expands rapidly or converts to steam and causes the rock to literally explode. You might do it and get lucky, but I wouldn't. Do a google for boiling rocks, see how many 'omg it exploded and I just got out of the hospital' type threads you find.

Edit: as far as just killing things, someone said put them in the sun for a day or two. I vote that. Turn them throughout the day(s) to make sure they dry all the way through.

Awesome thanks so much for the reply. I have them in vinegar water right now and then tomorrow or Wednesday I'll rinse them really good and put them in the sun until the weekend.

For anyone doing the vinegar or cooking and then the sun bath.... Highly consider running these rocks in a bin for a good week or two. I would test for phosphate and if zero at the end of a good 10 days then no prob add em. If they test high you need to purge the rock.

Water changes and gfo until its clean. I even used a HOB skimmer to remove whatever was left. Just my 2 Lincolns.
