I have identified this as Montastrea cavernosa (Moon/Star Coral), I am Interested if anyone else in the trade has this coral with the same or similar variation in color (red polyp with neon green center)? I feel it might be the only one of its kind in captivity, as I know what remote island in the south caribbean it was collected.

doubt it...

when i had the tank, i had some very very rare corals... blue true palythoa, blue rimed archohelia rediviva, black/red archohelia rediviva and others... but since no one collected them or there was no demand, i wouldn't be able to get anything for them... but i'm sure others around didn't have those corals...

and now they're dead...

LOL...

Apples and Oranges, Potosythetic vs non, the only demand for non photosynthetc corals of this kind are impulse buyers or dedicated hobbiest who are willing to put in the time to keep them alive, Live Photo/Zoo plankton drips, massive water changes = No Demand. Also those corals are available at the click of a button.

Zoas are constantly fusing in my systems as well. This brings up my next question, if it is unidentified or you have corals graft what gives one the right to personaly name that particular piece? So what if I can't get top dollar, it would be nice to name coral and have the lineage traced back to my business.

if people take you srsly... it's pretty easy... i have named corals before, but they aren't called gumbii's flaming moe's, or bgfc flaming moe's... i wouldn't want it named after me because i am nothing compared to steve or ora... they're both innovators and pioneers in our hobby... all i do is wh0re the forums... LOL...

anyways... there are lots of people that name corals... but only a few take them serial... like when someone tries to sell one of their signature zoas for 20PP and then someone else sells them for 5PP... keeps the name, but loses it's lineage and prestige... now that's hilarious... wah waah...

10dorrah in my pocket for your polyp.

LOL
you're gonna have to arm wrestle my friend for it... they're in his tank... HAHAHAHAlkdjfas;jdfaksl;djfkal;dsfj;lkadf

i think what he is getting at is this coral, as far as we can tell has not yet been collected, or not in large numbers as of yet. it was the only one that came in from the importer, harvested by a private diver meaning there may be more in the ocean but not in the states. he just wants to check it out to what anyone on this forum has seen and can provide evidence of it being sold anywhere else. thus making it a true one of a kind coral and allowing him to name it/brand it.

the only down side of it is at lest in my eyes is that a coral like that once fragged will take forever for the frags to grow into mother colonies and then be fragged again. making the spread of the branded coral very slow going. i guess it may not be a down side cuz it keeps it limited.
