IMG_0645.jpg Been wanting a frostbite but came across this DaVinci!

For anyone that knows clownfish well, doesn't he kind of look more perc than ocellaris? I bought him from Deep Blue Aquatics. And they ordered directly from Sea and Reef. Their websites say that the DaVinci is 100% ocellaris but who knows?

I'm speaking of the orange around the eyes - usually ocellaris doesn't have that. Simply asking if anyone else thinks DaVinci has some percula in it. I'm not trying to be spiteful. Sorry if it came across that way.

I didn't think you were spiteful, just missed the obvious. These fish are highly genetically modified.

It's hard to be certain with mass production breeders as there's many ways cross fertilization can happen.

You are correct in having doubts. They eyes don't look as dark as they should for an Occelaris and the patterns are Picassoish.
There are certain traits that should breed true regardless...

It is a nice looking fish, grow it out and see...

Thank you for the input! I'm a little annoyed ... I really wanted a true Da Vinci but regardless he's a pretty fish. For breeding purposes do you think its worth it to try and get a pure davinci occellaris? Even if mine is pure occellaris but it just looks a little perc, I'm not sure if it would be right to mate him? Thoughts?

There's people on both sides of the fence... Breed it and see what the babies look like. Their appearance should show clues of parents being full Occy or mixed blood.

Yeah it does look true perc-ish with those eyes. Don't think you can even try coutning the fins.

They might be similar to the wyoming whites. The wyoming whites generally have smaller pupil eyes like the true percs but are ocellaris.

I personally always get the wyoming white ocellaris and the platinum percula confused at many LFS with only the ventral fins as an indicator. Anyway, end rant.

Gotcha. According to the Clownfish Genetics Calculator DaVinci is part of the Gladiator clown line. Maybe a mixture of Gladiator and whyoming White? Anyway. He does seem to be filling in more and as he's growing his eyes do seem less perc-ish. Will be interested to see what happens!!!
