Hello Gang,

Its been a couple weeks if not more since my last fish homicide. I say homicide now because this is the fifth fish that died suddenly for no apparent reason. Tonight I was lucky enough to see the latest victim die. I had just turned my actinic lights on and sat down on the couch. After about 10 minutes or so I saw my hawk fish jump out of the rocks, do 4-5 flips and swim to the bottom corner of the tank. He took about five more gasp of air/water 20-30 seconds apart and then stopped breathing altogether. Outside of 4 snails and a couple hermit crabs the only thing that I know of in my tank is some tiny Asterina starfish. After what I saw tonight Im beginning to think something is stinging my fish. I now only have 4 chromes and they do not sleep on the rocks but every other fish that has died used to. Coincidence?

I havent put anything in my tank that I could have got a hitchhiker with in over a year. I'm beginning to feel like a bad reef keeper.

can you post your water parameters, could be that you might have a huge swing in pH when your lights go out, have you ever tested after your lights go out?

watch for mantis.
we were dipping some colonies and when we put them in fresh water a mantis shrimp came out from a rock., we never added that mantis shrimp but believed that it came in the rock when it was baby, fortunately we found it when was around 1.5".

I would be camping out a few night with a flashlight like jessesoto said. If you do use a flashlight with a red lense as that doesnt spook the tank inhabitants as much. I used this method for ridding my tank of a few hitchhiker gorilla crabs that came in on my live rock.

I'll keep a lookout. Would a Gorilla crab or Mantis leave some sign of damage on the fish? These fish are spotless when I pull them out of the tank.

As for PH I haven't tested in a while but I use the same buffer I have always used. It should stay around 8.0 - 8.3

Don't worry Ken, the trigger you gave me was a little to big for my tank. I pulled him out of my tank a couple weeks later. I gave him and the Tomato to Rukis. They should still be alive. lol

If the Mantis is a slasher it will leave wound if its a jabber it will be an internal damage they don't normally leave outside marks.

Yeah, I tested for electrical charge. I think all I can really do is give my live rock a fresh water bath before I use it in my new setup. Thanks for the suggestion.
