My DIY ended up on Reef Builders yesterday. I posted on FB initially about my DIY project and 6 hours later RB gave it some love.

https://reefbuilders.com/2016/08/31/chaetomorpha-reactor/

Some of you might have seen this already, I'm just going more in-depth about the components I used putting it together. My company, Sea Side Aquatics, manufactures these Media reactors varying from 12 inches to 22 inches. I love the concept of a chaeto reactor; however I live on a budget and like most of us can't afford the commercial version. My sump is limited and will not support a large refugium. To have bounty of macro algae, it has to be something external. The Sea Side Aquatics MF100 Twin can be fully external, has a quick-release lid, and an O-ring to prevent top end leakage.

A friend of mine, Ricky Tang, has a LED strip lighting called Up Light/Ro light. He has a store on Amazon and answered every LED question I threw at him. I just wanted to make sure it can handle the extended photo period and not burn out was my concern. His pricing on his Amazon store is very fair, plus if I ever ran into issues, he was a FB message away :). This choice was their "LED Strip light WATERPROOF Hydroponic kit." Emphasis on waterproof and add on the dimmer, it's really bright otherwise.
Installing super easy.

The water proof LED has a silicon coating over the LEDs themselves which completely protects them from moisture. Feels like a stiff gummy bear. The silicon can actually hold a grip so during application and wrapping it around the reactor's body, the strip easy stick on it and does not slip at all.

Buy the DIMMER adapter. This LED strip is extremely BRIGHT. Each strip is 16 feet/5 meters and all of it was wrapped around a 22 in acrylic body. At full blast, it burns to look directly at it given how concentrated it was. 30-50% dimmed looks perfect for macro algae growth. LED will last longer and displace less heat. Should handle a 16 hour photo-period with that much reduction in power. The pictures taken, was with the LEDs dimmed at 30-50%.

Add Copepods to the reactor! It'll make great breeding power plants for live feed, Tiger and Tisbee. I recommend my friends at AlgaGen Live, they have a great Tisbee blend that are highly reproductive and small enough to be consumed by every type of coral even SPS.

Plans are to have up to 8 of these reactors for my 8 footer. I hope to feed in excess and not worry too much. Benefits include: Stabilizing pH, increasing O2, lowering organic waste, breeding pods, and sharing the excess chaeto with the local hobby community.

Thank you for sharing.

I know one of the biggest thing the big bucks reactor has is the ability to cool the leds. Hopefully you won't warp your acrylic reactor.

Have you had it long enough to grow any chaeto yet?
Any reason why you didn't wrap it up completely and left gaps?
How hot does it get ?

I think this is an awesome idea. Why 8 reactors though? Also are you concerned that these led's are going to cause unwanted growth in sump area because of light overflow

Lol that's ironic, I saw that yesterday on face book and already ordered the supplies off amazon lol, very nice of you to share your ideas
The concept has been around for awhile, so its not an original idea of mine. But the pictures I saw of those who attempted it looks like they used the non-waterproof strips that easily slips and displaces.

The waterproof is silicone and holds a grip when place on the face of the media reactor.

It would be wasteful to wrap them anymore compact them like that. The light are super bright and chaeto doesn't require that intense of lighting.

Each strip is 300 LED running at 0.15-0.20 watts = 60 watts total, I am running this with a dimmer.

I already have a dual unit running for over a month now and its been going good and only running Red LED. This unit however will be better suited because its plant spectrum.

I am going to feed ALOT. The reactors will all be external and have a styrofoam barrier to keep light from entering the sump.

Will the LEDs burn the plastic of the reactor?
LED has a dimmer on it. With 78 degree water on the inside constantly running and the strips dimmed to 30-50%, over heating shouldnt be an issue on a 16 hour photo period

How long would you run the lights per day?
I want to put around 16 hours. Plant vegging is 14 or more hours. The longer the better.

Chaeto is effective because its the quickest of the Marcos and doesn't do asexual. However, they are very aggressive and will kill neighboring Macros from my multiple experiences.

I wish there was an easier way to remove the lids on those type of reactors. Thumb screws are a PITA to remove. Couldn't you make one that uses a large union so it's only 1 thing to remove? Kind of like the Reef Octopus/ATB reactors

What concerns me is the mention of a fire hazard in the reef builders article when those strips are exposed to moister.

Cool DIY though for sure.

I used the same lights and power supply off amazon, I just wrapped the lights around the inside a 4" black PVC from Home Depot ($10) and incorporated a $5 cooling fan, the reactor is a aquamaxx reactor and it slides in and out of the tube for easy cleaning and such, as for heat, I ran it dry on the counter for a good 4 hours and it was barely warm I think the cooling fan does wonders
