You dont as long as you have strong enough powerheads.

must people don't use air pumps in saltwater tanks. As long as you have water moving in the tank you will be ok

You can get yourself a skimmer if you don't have one yet, and that will kill 2 birds with 1 stone cause it will remove crap and make bubbles/oxygen

+1

Skimmers are not a must, but almost everyone will agree they are highly beneficial to sw tanks and I've never known anyone to not have one. If you have one or get one you don't need an air stone.

The only time I use an air pump is when I have to us it to get rid of cyano bacteria. I use a battery powered air pump during power outages.

How does this help with cyano? I'm currently dealing with some myself.
I'm not sure of the actual details, but in FW tanks, cyano is kept away or at bay with optimal O2 levels.

Anyone, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, to stick to the topic, I've seen a friend of mine keep an air pump with diffuser incorporated into their monitoring system just incase of a power outage. I have to ask how he set it up though. I'm sure there are other equipment to use instead of an air pump like the ones mentioned above.
