I've had different things happen with adding new rock (dry/dead). I've had my tank do absolutely nothing;by putting the rock in the sump instead of in the display. But I must add that I soaked it in RODI for a week. I was thinking if it leeches phosphates let it do it next to the gfo reactor.

Then I've had the opposite happen by adding a large rock directly to my display. Next morning I got a cyano bloom that lasted about 2 weeks.

I'm gonna free lib.... Some of the dry rock out on the market has phosphates or even high phosphates. I'm not gonna go into brands but buyer beware. (in your case a couple handfuls isn't that big of a deal). But there are threads on certain rocks leeching PO4

Try to soak them in RODI for a day or so. I recently added some dry Tonga to my sump and the tank hasn't flinched but ya never know.
