I finally gathered enough stuffs to set up my tank. It's a 110 gallon with a 20-25 gallon sump. I have it run with an overflow box hang on the back of the tank and 2 Quiet One 3000 pump for return.
After I turned on everything for awhile, I noticed that the water in the tank kept rising so I thought maybe the return rate was more than the overflow rate so I disconnect one of the Quiet One. The water level in the sump and the tank was more stable. However, the water in the sump kept rising, really slow though, about 1-2mm every 30 mins or so. I don't know what I have to do to fix this, since this is my first salt water tank. Second, the hang-on-back overflow box kept making really loud gurgling sound (like when you're really thirsty and take big gulp of water), except it's really really loud.
Please tell me what's the problem of my tank and how to fix them asap.
I only have tomorrow to finish setting up my tank and let it cycle, otherwise I would have to wait 2 more weeks to get the chance to work on it.
Thanks in advance

Check your overflow box and all tubing for blockages. Make sure you haven't used too drastic of a pipe/hose reducer on any of the plumbing to the sump. For example if you have reduced the plumbing taking the water down to the sump then the water can travel faster back to the tank then it is traveling the sump. If you have a u-tube type hang on the back overflow box maybe you did not get a strong enough siphon going in the u-tube. The smaller the bubble at the top of the u-tube the better the siphon is going to be allowing the water to travel faster to the sump. It's been awhile since I have used a hang on the back setup maybe someone else has a better idea of what the problem could be?

Side note: If you lower the overflow box side that sits in the tank itself that will lower the water lever in the tank. The water line can rise around a 1/2 inch above the bottom of the fingers on the "inside tank" side of the overflow box. Also I don't think using the Durso type plumbing will help your issue as stated below. It should only reduce some of the noise. To be honest with you I don't really ever remember much nose on my HOB overflow box. I think the noise has something to do with some kind of restriction in the plumbing.

Best,
Nick

yes...yes.....yes u CAN! you can put an inline shutoff valve to control how fast the water siphons to your sump.
yeah... that would really quiet it down too, good idea! :alberteinstein:

Seriously though, to me it sounds like the box may not be adjusted correctly for height or u-pipe siphon. Something to direct the flow so it gets enough air but doesn't gasp/gurgle for it may be a good idea, lots of people have filters/grills/modified plumbing/screens that prevent snails from flooding your floor and also break the surface of the water, play with it and do your research.
