Hi my name is David and im from Menifee and been in the Reefer hobby for about one year after having many freshwater setups. I started off with a 110gal 48x30x18 acrylic tank and stand I purchased for $500 from a friend. I had admired the tank manny times so when he said it was for sale I jumped on it. I soon learned how to clean it and that most of the hardware was outdated. I used the ecosystem sump no fuge, cadlight skimmer, iwaki pump, and 2 koralia powerheads. As far as the livestock I started with 80lbs LR, 120lb LS and ran for 4 weeks then when there was no amonia or nitrate I started a clean up crew of a handful of crabs snails and cleaner shrimp. All did well over the next several weeks so I added 5 frags,5 damsels and med. Hippo Tang that all died over the next few months when I battled red slime. Restocked after a few weeks with small pair of Clowns, 6 line wrass, yellow tang and 5 chromis. Couple months stable I added 2 sand sifting stars and surpent. Then out of nowhere one of the starfish died under the sand and it took 2 weeks for me to find it while I was doing a water change. This resulted in amonia spike and my yellow tang ended up taking a porcelain vacation. Then the hair algae bloomed like crazy tried to lower nitrate with water changes but nothing seemed to work so I added bio pellet reactor and things seem to be getting much better.

Feel free to ask questions or make fun of my mistakes.

David

I just wanted to post my journey so far in the hobby and see if there's anybody out there that could offer some advice or maybe ask questions of things I might not be doing rite.

Welcome David.
I am pretty close to you, Nuevo. Moving to Menifee in September though. Let me know if you want to come check out my tank and pick my brain with any questions you might have.

thank you for all the welcomes guys... So I went to turn my day lights on today and it appears the one of my ballast is gone bad I'm using a Hamilton technologies retrofit T5 4x54. Anybody have any suggestions of how to get it fixed cheap?

Welcome to socali .. I live not to far from you as well !! You will probably just have to replace the one ballast that is out ... I would recomend doing both of them together that way they a brand new square one whoever your local fish store is should be able to get you one or both if you chose ... and maybe replace the bulbs as well if they are over 6 months old !! As far a battling the issues with your tank and its water conditions I would do a 20% water change every 2 weeks and make sure you are using good "Reef salt" not that crappy "Ocean water" .. also your tank may have not been completely cycled before you started adding live stock ..
