I hear plenty of stupid remarks about wild versus named. So let's see what you know about wild coral and named coral.

I will say a short bit just to warm my hands on my small fire, I got going in a hobo trash can.

I know that everything that comes in from the Pacific which is labeled generically on the slip from its origin and does not have a planted base is deemed a wild branch of coral. I also know that they come in all sorts of sizes. From a 1" piece all the way to 2' across. That is what I've personally seen with my good eye and my new bionic eye. (Paly juice apparently made my eye sight better in the long run.)

Without new stock coming in "wild" no new names pieces will exist. Case in point Rukises blue monster and some of the stuff from Tony at Reef Raft. What makes them LE/named? Coloring, adaptability in aquariums, maintained life and color and rarity of growth or species.

The ocean is a marvel that at maximum has been maybe 30% explored. Between remoteness of islands, weather conditions, the equipment and government regulations on poaching/collecting coral we have not even broke the surface on coral that is rare and beautiful.

Because of friends I have seen coral that would make your eyes pop out. Coral that go to only millionaire collectors that don't exist on forums. Coral formations that I haven't even seen in the thick leather bound books I have read on my polar bear hide, naked. This is why I laugh when I see people write ridiculous remarks about wild coral.

Maybe one day something you attained wild can be brought up to be named. May we be so lucky to have saved a piece long enough to be deemed "limited edition."

Here's a little branch of something that was so bright that I had to beg the dealer to give me a crumb. It was one branch almost a year ago. It finally rooted and is coloring up quite nice.
because of my dominantly blue leds it has new green coloring it did not have wild. It was neon pinkish red with cream. Think of a strawberry shortcake gone nuclear pink.

What do you guys think about wild versus named? And please add a picture of something you have that is "wild" that you think is worthy of an old reef guy to name. No one is here to judge so please post what you have. Especially you ReefPlanet and any of you collector types.

Florida as long as you have a salt water fishing license there are restrictions on what and how items can be taken.

That's really cool that you collected yourself. I dream about that. When I was on the reef in the Riviera Maya I came across some gorgeous sea fans that I wanted. Also some crazy neon green nem's that were small. No SPS but definitely a lot of softies.

No one has wild frags of something they want to share?

here's a too down of something I think is wild cause no one has named it.

I'm going to Cancun next month, can people dive for corals there?

Puerto Morelos will be a top snorkel/dive reef. You can see a full reef and bonuses are huge 8' fish, wrasses, lots of tangs, sharks, and very large sea turtles.

Also look into going to the pink sea area and the flamingo sanctuary on the mangroves. If you like fast boats and just enjoying nature, it is well worth it. Isla Mujeres is second to puerto Morelos and third IMO is Cozumel. Enjoy Cozumel during the day. Lots to do in Cancun/Riviera Maya. I had a time share for 9 years and enjoyed every trip.
