I picked up this tank from Reef Raft's retail store that's closing. Somewhere during transport the tank was chipped in the lower left corner of the front panel. When this happened I immediately thought the tank was out of commission, however after speaking with a few members on Nano-Reef (the other forum I'm part of) and CAD Lights directly, the general consensus is that the tank is fine to function.

I will be repairing the chip with JB Weld which should provide some additional support as well as make it look better, however after speaking with CAD Lights (who also agreed that the tank is fine to function with the chip) they've offered me a few alternatives (add lower eurobrace to the bottom for additional support or a completely new tank at a reduced cost due to the situation).

I haven't had a glass tank in a long time and this was always one of my fears. I'd really like to take CAD Lights up on their offer for a complete replacement but wouldn't be able to do that unless I was able to sell this tank.

Anyone out there not concerned about a chip like this or who is handy with glass that can replace the front panel or add the eurobrace on their own interested in buying the tank alone?

I've filled the tank completely to leak test and see if the chipped area failed and there were no issues. Here is a link to the Nano-Reef Thread where I've been discussing with other members and CAD Lights.

Some info about the tank:

  • Dims: 36x24x18
  • Low Iron Glass
  • 1.5" Durso Overflow (Might be 1.25" but pretty sure it's 1.5", I will confirm when I get home)
  • 1" Return
  • Schedule 80 plumbing
  • Has braided tubing for both overflow and return
  • I've done some initial cleaning and leak testing (this thing was dirty when I picked it up)

The Tank - there is a small amount of scratching at the lower right of the tank but not really noticeable (I can try and get a better picture if you want).

$250.00, OBO local pickup in Yorba Linda. Open to offers but honestly I will be setting this tank up once the repair is complete if it doesn't sell so no super lowball offers please.

PM with any questions or feel free to shoot me a text. 562.652.8202.

Have gotten a couple texts about this...giving it another bump before I make the repair tomorrow and prep to set it up.

I agreed to 200.00 with someone via text but they have not confirmed their intent to purchase so I'll make that same offer to everyone. This is for the tank only, no stand.

any better picture of the crack?

Hi Alejandro..the damage is not a crack, it's just a chip. CAD lights said that it because the piece of glass came out in 1 piece there's no crack or splintering (basically the "best" damage that could happen I guess). All the pictures are on this thread: Nano-Reef Thread

Edit: More Pics

Also, I will be repairing this with JB Weld and replacing the chipped piece tonight unless someone wants it and does not want the repair to be completed.

Hmm this is an intriguing purchase...

As a car hobbyist for 15 years and it was my main hobby before saltwater stuff I'd say he careful with an epoxy like jb weld because they are a putty based epoxy so it will get messy. For automotive I am always able to sand down so it matches the edge of my transmissions. But for aquariums you don't have that option. Don't even bother trying to razor blading it you'll end up breaking blades all day.

Have you thought of resin epoxies instead? Same thing used by windshield repair kits for cars. They do require UV light to dry so all you would have to do is move the tank in sunlight and do the repair outdoors.

This is assuming you have the original chipped piece handy?

Shoot....screw it I might as well buy it from you lol.

Nice video. I have heard that the JB Weld is a pain to clean after.

I completed the repair tonight because I didn't have any solid interest in the tank...I was careful :) After the JB weld set up a little I wipe the excess off. It's not perfect but I think it came out pretty well. I'm not sure if I'll even bother trying to make it look much better.

looks pretty darn good. any front shots of it?

Now the waiting part of 3 days lol.
Here's the front, when there is a light shining on it you can see where I wiped off the excess but all in all I think it came out pretty good. I have a black yoga mat to place between the tank and stand so with all that black I'm sure it'll all blend together nicely.

the hoarder in me said buy it. but i dont need another tank.
So that's what you call it? Been trying to put a name on that thought process of "ohh that looks different and nice i should get it" impulsive buying.

I think with reefing we just call it obsessing, not hording...makes it sound less clinical, lol.

I'm surprised no one took it either...the CAD Lights offer of a new tank at a great price because of the chip on this one was kind of paying it forward I guess....so 200.00 for this tank seemed like a pay to forward deal to me too but it's all in the value of the purchaser.

In any event, I'll leave this thread up for a few more days, I'm going to have a bottom eurobrace put in sometime in the next few days for added support but once that's done I'm just gonna keep it.
