My Tank Build
#1
Ok people here's another opened question on fuse's this time. My huge is currently only running tank water through it, no algae substrate etc in it.

My question:

Should I only add chateo?
Chateo and rock rubble?
Chateo and DSB?
DSB and rock rubble?
Miracle MUD?

In the past I've only run chateo in my luges but I'm interested in knowing what others are doing?

Depends on what you’re going for. If you want to house pods rubble rock will help. I don’t run anything other than macro algae in my fuge section. I do have marine pure cubes and maxpect biospheres in my filter sock are of the sump. That’s where most of my pods live.

I ran chaeto and rock rubble for a while but found the rock to be a harbor for other algaes and made cleaning of the fuge more difficult.

Now I run chaeto and small basket of bio media. Much easier to pull the basket and rinse clean if need be.

If you use rubble in your sump, be sure to blow it free of detritus every once in a while. I prefer an actual fuge, so I'll be doing a deep sand bed in my sump with a little macro on top. If you're interested in DSB, then pick up Ron Shimek's book about deep sand beds. You can buy it on Amazon for 4 or 5 bucks.
Sand Bed Secrets
In the 90's all of my tanks had display refugiums with a DSB and they all thrived. They're not nutrient sinks if you set them up correctly, but they can be if you don't follow Ron's set up (which is rather easy). What most people call a fuge today is just an algae bed or reactor and not a refugium, which consists of sand (or mud) some rubble (just a little) and macro algae.
Jus some things to consider and research. Good luck!

Just macro algae. Rubble rocks accumulate detritus. I also put a small pump and run it a few hours a days.

Nobody uses DSBS anymore. All my tanks ahead at least three or four inches in them. Amazing the things you’d see moving about at night deep in the bed. Never had problems with them. DO NOT DISTURB! I’d put my base rock in first then the sand Instead of sand first then rock. Seemed more natural since we know rock doesn’t sit on the sand in the ocean. Made things better for gobies and sand sleeping fish like wrasses.
Believe why DSBS in sumps became popular since they became unpopular in the display. Instead of trying to create“natural” habitats to admire, they’ve become sterile chemically medicated holding tanks.
