what happened with your unknown fish disease issue? did it resolve itself?
It seems to have... really weird. I still have no idea what it was, but since I've added a more diverse group of livestock (I've since added some cleaner shrimp, more snails and CUC- all QT'd), along with my QT'd corals, all of the fish have been really good (I just jinxed myself). I've been so busy with the tank, work, and life, I haven't had a chance to give an update, but that will hopefully be coming soon.

Seriously... I haven't added any more fish, but as long as things continue to go well from the fish perspective, I'll probably add a few more over the Summer. Right now, I'm just focusing on adding corals, and I'm taking things slowly on that front since I QT all corals for at least 45 days (usually longer to allow the frags I'm starting with to grow out a little).

Since, at the time I ordered them, we were all on lockdown due to COVID, I just looked up on Amazon to find the most highly rated ones that weren't crazy expensive. If you weren't in Pasadena, I would offer them up for you to borrow (unless you're ever down in Orange County).
Do you recall their load capacity?

This is what you can type into Amazon to get the same exact ones I have: "IMT Heavy Duty Dual Vacuum Suction Cup Glass Lifter with Curved Pads".

They are rated for 330lbs. each, and I got 4 of them. Since I'm paranoid, I had four guys with one hand on the suction cup, and one hand holding the tank, but they worked without an issue and that ended up being unnecessary. Is your tank coming soon?

According to Zoya could be here Friday. I also pick up the sump, fuge, and auto top-off on Friday from Advance Acrylic.

Likewise I'm a bit paranoid and the initial set I purchased only handles 220lbs each so I was like let me ask to be on the safe side.

yeah i've moved on to corals also. corals stress me out way less :D

i'm aiming for 60 days on mine since i'm not running it at 80+ (at least ye..), but i might try to shortcut some sticks if i'm able to remove them from plugs upon arrival and only do 45 days

Yeah, my rationale with 45+ days is that any fish-borne disease/parasites have generally completed their life cycle by then (or in the case of Ich or Velvet- they have already hatched and are in the water column rather than attached to the calcium base, so as long as you rinse them before transferring, you should be good to go- I actually spoke to Humblefish about this). This also allows me time to inspect the coral for any other pests or pest algae, which usually pop up within a month or so.

Having said that, I would say most of my corals are in the QT for at least 60 days because I want to grow them out a bit so they don't look so small in my big tank :D.

Thanks for asking!!! Hahaha.

An update is LOOOONG overdue, but I'll put something together very soon. In short, all is going pretty well, but there's always something right?

Always something in reefing yep

Can you highlight how things are going with the Aquamaxx AF in particular when you update?

Happy to! The Aquamaxx Auto Fleece Roller works great! I have no complaints, although I have nothing to compare it to. But honestly, it is pretty basic technology, so I'm not sure why some other units are significantly more expensive. I'd recommend it for sure.

A bigger update will come though.

UPDATES... WHERE DO I START???

The Good...
> More corals have been added (I'll try to get some decent pictures soon). I have a nice little euphyllia garden going, some hammers in one spot, some torches in another, and I just recently started quarantining some different color variants of octospawn. I've also added a nice blue maxima clam, some goniopora, and quite a few SPS frags, which have honestly have been a little hit and miss in my system so far. The only corals the Moorish Idol seems to pick at so far are acans and my Space Invader Pectina, so those have been relegated back down to the Coral QT tank until I feel like I can introduce them again to see if the dumb fish remembers (hahaha!).
> More fish have been added after a few months of no more "mysterious deaths". No other fish were lost since my last post, so I figured I would just take the summer and let things settle down a while before adding anymore fish (plus, I was too busy over the summer to take the time and quarantine anything other than some corals). After a few months of everything running smoothly and all of the fish looking healthy, I've started adding some new quarantined fish, including a Blue Star Leopard Wrasse and a Flame Angel. I also have a Flame Hawkfish and Springers Damselfish in quarantine, with some more fish lined up in the next month or so (possibly a fairy wrasse or two and a Copperband Butterflyfish).

The Bad (or not-so-good)...
> Turf Algae Issues: I don't know exactly how it got into the tank, since ALL of my livestock/corals/inverts go through a quarantine of at least 45 days, but some turf algae made it into my system. It started on the sandbed of all places, like little tumbleweeds of turf algae (which I would siphon out once a week), then made it onto the rock work. It seems to be in check at the moment, but that was only after I added two urchins from ReefCleaners that seem to be mowing it down slowly but surely. I might need to add one more, but I also don't want the urchins to starve by adding too many at once.

Equipment Reviews...
> RedSea Gyre 45
: I honestly have not had any major issues with the equipment I chose (and it has been over a year now), EXCEPT the Red Sea Gyre45. Just recently (within the last month or so) even after I give it a Citric Acid bath, it gets jammed, then I can get it unjammed, it'll start working again, then several days later, it'll get jammed again. I think it has something to do with a rubber gasket thing by the propeller, but I'm not sure how to fix it. So, if anyone has had any experience with Red Sea gyres and would like to give me some tips, they'd be welcome. I've been so busy lately that I haven't even had a chance to reach out to Red Sea myself, but that day will come soon.
> Tunze: with the above problems with the RedSea, and the fact the gyres in general need to be cleaned more often, I was thinking of replacing the flow coming from the overflow tower with one of the more powerful controllable Tunze pumps (6255), just to get some more flow going through the rock work. Everything looks happy right now, but I can see it starting to get stagnant once things start growing in. Tunze pumps are such great quality and low maintenance, I can simply clean it when some coralline builds up, or leave it for a year and it'll still work flawlessly (although, I like to keep my tank clean, so regular cleanings are a must for me).

Other than that, life has been extremely busy. Some lady decided to not look where she was driving and crashed head on into my car, which led to me having to do PT for a few months over the summer and having to find a new car. The kids are back in school, with all of the homework that comes with it. Work has been busy as well. So I just need to get off my ass and take some decent pictures of the tank soon. Sorry guys!

Dang, glad to hear you are okay! Head on is no joke.

I'm also going tunze. I'll be retiring my mp40s for 6105 and a wavebox. I've been running one of them in a 50g bin cycling the rockscape and man does that thing push some water. The tub is about 4' oval and that single pump on wave pulse has a heck of a lot of water moving. Very quite too. The gyre design is such a nice type of flow but the maintenance is too much for my lazy butt.

Sounds like it's plugging along all in all. Looking forward to some pictures

I had a head on collision on I-5 about 10 years back so I know the initial fear and then all the aches and pains after associated with that so I’m really glad you are ok. Also glad to hear that the tank is ticking along.

Question: how’s the efficiency of the skimmer with the roller mat running?

Thanks!

The skimmer has been performing really well (and it being adjustable is probably pretty key). I only empty it once a week, but it still kicks out some dark stuff. I'm sure if I pulled the rollermat off, it would just be more volume of liquid being removed. With that being said, I feel like I got an appropriately sized skimmer for my tank.

Thanks dude! Yeah, Tunze is what I used to run quite a bit, so going back to my roots (at least partially, since I'll still run my MP40's).

How exactly is your AquaMaxx AF-1 plumbed? Do you have a separate pump feeding it or is it connected directly to the main drain line?
