Hey everyone, my name is Randy and I will be moving to Pasadena very soon. I will be setting up my first saltwater tank after getting into the hobby through freshwater tanks this past year with my college roommate. I plan on setting up a 20g long nano reef system (that will likely start as a FOWLR with t5 ho lighting and a aquaclear DIY refug). I am trying to learn quickly and am currently trying to plan out a cleaning crew for the tank once cycling is complete. Suggestions for a crew, livestock, cycling, and even the best kind of top for the tank would be greatly appreciated.

My biggest need is finding good local stores! I am searching without much luck (difficult to sift through google results and mixed/old reviews). I am in need of a couple quality stores that are fairly close to Pasadena and offer reasonably priced supplies/livestock (I will need live rock, everything else is order). In addition I don't mind an occasional drive to a very awesome/high end saltwater shop somewhere further away in the city. All input is greatly appreciated and it is nice to meet you all!

Welcome. Pasadena tropical fish will probably be closets to you. The owner is a nice guy, I forget his name. I used to live in south Pasadena and I really miss it.

SPS coral store is a great one and its not too far from you. You would learn a lot there as Aaron is very knowledgable and has great customer service. Jan's is about 20 minutes away from you too. Mixed reviews but you might like it as a beginner.

Welcome! Pasadena Tropical Fish is closest to you Like Steve said. There are other small shops near pasadena but I wouldn't go to them (not saltwater oriented). I've never been to SPS Coral Store but hear many great things about that place. I believe Pasadena Tropical does a 20% off sale on fish once or twice a week if you come at the right time. Basically you can buy it straight from the distributor bag, but once it goes in their tanks its full price. Feel free to post before you go venture out looking for a particular item and I'm sure many members would be more than happy to help you out or give a good reference.

Welcome.

Yes, Pasadena Tropical Fish on Colorado is the closest to you. Steve is the owner. He is kind of tough at first but a good guy and it is a good LFS. I try to buy most of my dry god supplies there. You can also find an occasional gem. He is pretty old school but will help you get what you need.

SPS Coral store in La Canada is small but nice. You wont find a lot of beginning corals there but it will be a good place for fish. Aaron is very helpful and knowledgeable. I am pretty sure he got his start at PTF in Pasadena.

Thanks I will definitely check these stores out. Just to clarify, Aaron is the owner of SPS? Someone seemed to mention him separately from SPS.
