Hello~
my name is Andy, currently living in the Chino hills area of socal, and so new to the hobby i haven't even started yet.

i started out about a year ago on freshwater with a cichlid tank, admittedly the tank i own is small for these fish so i have been looking to upgrade. i recently purchased a 80g tank and plan to add coast to coast ghost to external overflow (even thats even the right way to say it?) with a 29g sump. the initial purpose was to practice setting up the sump with pipes for the eventual change to saltwater.

But now, instead of upgrading to a larger freshwater, i now want to give saltwater a try...
but with all things i needed to speak to the treasury department, having had my application veto'ed i gave up and just took my wife to a reef shop. long story short, she wants a bigger tank for SW then the 80g.

having looked on CL ive found a nice acrylic 120, hopefully it will be still available in the morning. i plan to use the same setup as with the 80g (C2C beanainmal) and now this is where im having problems.

the plan is to eventually have a reef/fish setup but for now its going to be a fish only tank.
the things i plan to buy are:

live rock
live sand
skimmer
sump/plumbing
return pump
LED lights
ro-di/plumbing
wavemaker

whilst talking to the owner of the reef shop a few things he said to me were different from what i have been reading, so if anyone can help teach a beginner it would be much appreciated.

he said:

"dont bother with a refuge, just go with a over sized skimmer". i asked him about copapods, he replied "enough will be made in the tank" im not to sure what to think of this. truth be told i was quite convinced with what he was saying. his tanks looked very beautiful. so my question is, is true? and if so what would be a good oversized skimmer for a 120g be?

im sure i'll have many other questions along the way, i will be sure to post on the appropriate threads since this is really and meet and greet, so sorry for the long post and hi!
Andy

Hi Andy and welcome to the forum. A refugium is a great place to grow copepods or other macroalgaes. Personally i like them as a safe haven for new fish because i have the room for it. it keeps phosphates out of the tank for me. A skimmer is a different matter. it removes organic matter and not necessarily phosphates. People try to go with an oversized skimmer and end up having problems with their skimmer not working correctly.

pods will grow plentiful in your display tank but will multiply abundantly in your refugium.

Welcome Andy! Same as what Six2seven said, refugiums probably aren't "needed" but they are great to have, multiple uses and if you get any fish that love to eat Copapods it would be great to have them replenish the tank from there. I personally love them. Love to see pics when your ready! Welcome to the addiction

Welcome, I agree with six2seven.

Also with a fuge, you can add more Live Rock to help out with your bio load! Keeping a fuge with macro and having lights on it 24hrs will help to stabilize your pH and provide more oxygen for your fish.

Good luck with your build!

Different strokes for different folks. lol Can't say the LFS owner is wrong especially if his tanks look very good. If anything a skimmer is more of a necessity than a fuge, but that doesn't mean you can't have them both either. I think most people on the forums have oversized skimmers along with a fuge. Their are no drawbacks I can think of in having a fuge. All the benefits have already been mentioned above plus it's a nice place to put bad fishies in time out as well until you can find them a suitable home. As far as oversized skimmers, six2seven is most likely referring to a severely oversized skimmers in which it can strip too much from the water both good and bad.

I'm very glad I went with a fuge.

Another nice perk of running a refugium is that nuisance algae will usually pop up there first with the light being on 24/7. I'll have a cyanobacteria outbreak in my fuge way before I ever see a spot in my tank. It will come in handy with a new tank, and being new to the hobby.

thank you very much for the kind welcomes and the advice you have all given me. the tank im thinking of setting up wont be up for a while, we have an girl who's 8 months old so she takes centre stage at the moment. i think i would go for a higher rated skimmer just for the the virtue of bigger is usual better for filtration, and add a refuge. obviously i'll need to research more in this. sometimes its quite daunting with all this information at hand. i will use this forums and i will ask a lot of question. thank you for the patience and again for the warm welcomes

Andy~
