Just curious. looking into purchasing a wave maker but I have a HOB overflow on the right side, not middle, of my tank... Wont the splashing around cause the water not to overflow properly and not work right? Or am I thinking into it too much.... How does it work?

A wavemaker doesn't necessarily "splash" the water around. I think the purpose is more to provide a somewhat random current throughout the tank to better replicate the natural current of the ocean. Some corals such as SPS like an alternating/random current rather than just a steady blast. Don't think about it in the sense of creating a tsunami that will splash water out of your tank.

As far as how it works it depends on the type of wavemaker you are going to purchase. I have a RedSea Wavemaster Pro. It works by plugging up to 4 powerheads into the unit and then choosing a pre-programmed wave motion. You can choose from a gentle, rolling, turbulent or alternating. I'm assuming if you choose turbulent you will have all four powerheads coming on/off rather close together in time rather than say 1 on and three off, 2 on 2 off, etc.. The lights on the front of the unit show when each pump is on. If you have something like a Vortech MP10 you can also choose a similar function but the one powerhead does all of the work. It might come up really strong for 20 seconds and then drop off for 10 seconds at a lower rate and then strong again for 5 seconds, etc.

also what is the best way to make a "wave" in the tank. all the pumps on one side of the tank so when it bounces off the other side it will create the wave or what?

If your overflow is a HOB i would be worried about the wave going to low and causing the siphon to break on your over flow. If you loose the siphon I think your tank would overflow. I wouldnt use a wave maker with a HOB overflow, I would only do it if the tank was drilled.

what kind of HOB overflow box you have? If you run a cpr with an aqualifter pump, you don't need to worry about the siphon breaking.

Most hob over flow boxes r set that they won't break the siphon. Does urs break syphon when u turn the return off? The problem u might encounter would b the wave moving the hob ofb around witch that may cause a break in the syphon. Or even the increase splashing into the suffuse skimmer will cause more air to go into the syphon tube. This would cause a reduction in the water it will syphon or even cause it to break the syphon.

Yeah my overflow is crappy. it doesn't break syphon but it gets an air bubble in it all the time so that the syphon rate dies a lot.. I've tried everything to fix it. Never heard of cpr.. watched a video.. looks really nice. might have to switch over to that....
