I know the economy has been tough for a lot of us so I was just wondering how it has affected you in terms of this hobby. Anybody have any tips on what we can do to help save during these hard times?

Sell it all.

Right now I could handle the expense but 6-12 months from now I just might need that money I spent on the hobby. Then it would be too late.

:hahaha: stupid me is in the middle of an upgrade :afraid:
buying corals and fish has been difficult, gotta scrimp and save.....but likewise there have been LOTS of great deals on the boards which helped me put the system together. Turned the lights back to 6 hrs, skimming on a timer as well. Right now I'm looking into every way to save a few watts here and there. Giving up the reef will be more detrimental to me than a li'l less $$$ so I'mma keep on keepin' on

Well for me, I do sales for the Residential Construction Industry, My wife worked for the same company and got laid off the week before Xmas, sales has dropped at least 80%, were hanging in there, it was a choice of cutting back on corals or food, My kids have lost allot of weight since Xmas, just kidding. I'm trying to go thru all my extra stuff and see who wants to trade for corals, there allot of people in the same boat, but we'll survive !

Well i have been cutting back since December first sign NO BONUS for 08, then January, no increase this year and the same month 10% cut across the board for 3 months and 15% to all senior management.

Well that was a dessision made by 90% of the 20,000 + Johnsonoutdoors employee world wide.

So i make my own fish food, uses baking soda for ALK, Epson Salt with mag flake to last longer and uses Scripps water which is FREE turn off and dettach chiller and shorten the light schedule and it works.

As a hobbyist:
-I'm spending about the same....helps when I get stuff wholesale... ;) lol

As a business:
-new servicing accounts are fewer n farther between.
-sales have dropped.

However...that means I've got an even bigger opportunity for growth!! :)

Spending more time with the fam, less time with the tank. I love the hobby, but it's very difficult to justify keeping the lights on when people are losing their jobs and more of us are in the crosshairs.

Will hold out a little longer, but downsizing is definitely in the forcast.

I planned on cutting back on my spending, but instead I'm upgrading my tank and all my equipment (just got an MP40W), and we're in the middle of an addition to our home. But as soon as that's done I'm not buying anymore corals:D (thats what she/wifey thinks)...

Last weekend we attended the LA Golf Show to research the possiblity of promoting a new show in the golfing industry. Attendance was extremely disappointing, as were the exhibitors. When you see half the venue half filled with ShamWow, chair/neck message, and Spine-doctors-R-us, you KNOW the promoter was pretty desperate to fill booth space!

We too lost about 15% or our original exhibitors due to this insane ecomony (PFO, Jeff's Exotic, Eshoppes, etc.) Obviously now is not the time to start a new expo venture; we'll instead work on improving the Marine Aquarium
Expo for now and perhaps expand to a second location (South Florida, etc.) once the econmic crisis is over. As for the show coming up, we really don't think attendees will balk at our $10 entrance price...it is still a bargain, however I am concerned nonetheless that people will spend less $$$ on corals and such. Those who are going are certain to see some wheeling and dealing I suspect. We'll see in a few short weeks. Can't Wait!

Can't buy crap

Hello Everyone,

I just starting reefing about 5 months ago. I would like to aggressively start growing my reef but economic circumstances caused a major halt in my plans. I currently work for Downey Savings and Loan which got bought out by US bank and really don't know the future that it holds. Will the branch I work at will remain open? Because of this uncertainty, I can't go on a reef spending spree. I have other financial obligations i have to honor before my reefing. That is why I am looking for like killer deals when it comes to corals. I hate being a cheap a## or a penny pincher, but the economic crisis has forced me to be very frugal. I am deeply sorry if I have offended anyone selling corals and I have offered less. It is tough times and my saltwater tank at the end of the day gives me a piece of tranquality and peace. That is why I am hanging on a thread to continue my hobby and not close shop. Best wishes and we will get thru this together.

I'm one of the vultures that is actually taking advantage of the situation; I was able to get into the hobby because someone else wasn't able to stay. I bought a whole setup for a good price and had a nice base to build off of as far as cycling and maintaining goes. I've also gotten a few items from people that were breaking down tanks and looking for cash. My wife and I both have good jobs that we appreciate very much right now.
