I was wondering how many of you siphon your sand during water changes?

I've heard some people say its good if you do it regularly and bad if you do it like only once a year.

What do you guys say?

I used to vacuum my sand bed with each weekly water change on my 120g. Now that the tank has mature and no more algae or cyanobacteria, I only vacuum once a month. So it depends on how dirty your sandbed gets overtime.

Just started about 4 months ago I do it every waterchange or every other depending if I have algae or not.

It does shrink your pods population but I prefer nice soft clean sand and just feed more.

I use a gravel cleaner during my water changes. It might now be the best thing for fine sand though

Wow, I never even considered doing that. I thought by siphoning, the various layers of sand would be disturbed and all those anaerobic bacteria would croak as well as mess up tank dynamics

If you have a DSB, I wouldn't touch it. My sandbed is only 1"-2" and it keeps my sand nice and white. You'll be surprised how much silt builds up in the sand.
