Ok, this coral looks like a closed zoa heads that never open with a neon yellow/ maybe green center.

I got a little piece of these form a guy that I bought zoas from and he never knew what it was.

Any help appreciated :)

thanks

I had a colony of pink zoas the size of a football like 4 years ago. I had it under bright metal halide light. The polyps stayed closed like this for 7 months. The crazy thing is the "mat" kept growing bigger. The looked just like the above photo. Even after I removed them from that tank and placed them into another it took 3-4 weeks before they began to open up.

its hard to say !! they shouldnt mess your tank up if they melt .. Maybe try dipping them in some revive coral dip !! could have a parasite on them causing them to stay closed ?? if they were free you could just toss them or wait and see what happens .. as far as lights go ?? there Zoo's they should open under almost any light if nothing is wrong with them ..

zoas... /thread

i didn't even have to read the replies... throw them in your friend's tank if they aren't doing good there... i bet they will open up... there is no other coral that looks like that or is that... they're some zoas that are near deaths...

Hmm cool i'll see what I can do, I don't have any buddies that are in the hobby, I also dont want to drive far just to put them in someone's tank. I guess i'll just see what happens.

Don't need friends just start a thread. Best thing you could do is bank it if your tank isn't providing the coral what it needs. I have issues with some of my zoas currently, they stay closed and others are constantly open. Go figure.

Give it another week, how about posting up your alkalinity, Calcium, phosphate, nitrate, and magnesium levels? That will help us better understand your tank. Also what salt you use and how often you change water? Do you top off RODI manually? Salinity, 1.025-1.026?
What's the lighting and skimmers brand and how long is your lighting cycle. How high is the light off the water?

Things like that get us super informed and we can all assess from there.
