I would definitely buy the IO. I used IO and Reef Crystals for years, switched a few years ago and have had nothing but trouble. I had a bad batch of Tropic with very low alk. hth

IME IO needs lotsa calcium, alk & trace supplementation. prob reef crystals is better.

im sticking with TMP. it dissolves the best for me. Besides, i prefer german things (including cars, weapons, electronics) over french! Japanese ok (i hate Lexus), made in the USA is next best. Also TMP has lower silicates, even if copper is kind of in the high side.

Every salt had a bad batch, including IO & RC! frequent water changes on large tanks, using IO can save hundreds per year. Thats if cost is a concern...

Yep, anyone can make any salt work as long as they test deligently and have good technique.

several articles support that there is still no salt mix that comes really close to nsw... which is ok because most reef tanks are a very alien environments from the natural reef.

review all past TOTM anywhere, there is NO salt most commonly used.

Ca410
Mg1230

Red Sea Pro was my 1st choice also, but hearing that TMPR was the best, I went with it, Recommended by LFS and others....

I'm not dosing my tank, just WC's Like to keep it simple....

TMP was the best, when it came out in ~2007.

RSCP is the best now IMO. Its a newer formula, its numbers are better, and its an evaporated salt which tricks people into thinking its closer to NSW. I would be all into RSCP, but it doesnt mix as well as TMP and it leaves a poopy brown residue in my sweet new white translucent mixing vats. Cant have that.. dumb reason but its the truth.

IO was the best when it came out decades ago.

If you ignore the cost, newer is generally better! like overall LED is better than MH, vortechs are better than tunze, biopellets are better than vodka, tank bred/raised is better than wild, etc...

when you guys say IO do you mean reef crystals?

I'm using RSCP right now and I like it a lot....although there is a brown residue but that's just precipitate. I'm interested in trying out reef crystals next....opinions on that?

Hey Armando, in the previous tanks I have used Tropic Marin and my corals all did great. Now in this tank I am using IO and my corals are doing just as great. So my 2 cents is go with IO and save yourself money.

Actually Reef Crystals is made my Instant Ocean(IO). IO is the original version, they made the Reef Crystals with higher levels of Cal, Alk and Mg for reef tanks.
I have used RC and it also left a brown residue, which is why I switched from it. I tried Brightwell's, RSCP, and D&D and they all leave brown residue. From what I have seen TMRP is the only one of the "reef" salts that mixes clear with no residue.
I have heard that original IO does not so I am going to switch back to that once I finish my bucket of RSCP.
Though I may try Coralife again as Fish Supply has it cheap as heck right now...

Couldn't agree more, they are all good, just depends how much you want to supplement...

Marlando the alk is very low in tmp. I've had been using it and same as you litttle to no dosing and finally had to switch cuz the alk was getting down too low.

I would try io... Lots are using it with good results from what I've read.

I think once any tank reaches a certain stocking point it will be inevitable to dose no matter the salt you choose.

i get hooked up for like ~$10/50 gallon bag of coralife... since everything is doing okay, I'll stick w/ it then since I haven't had a reason to switch yet.. but if anyone knows when IO gets that cheap, I'll definitely try it out.
