I don't think it's going to do much just sitting in place, the whole idea is to allow it to cover the entire tank. It's also a flocculant, so I don't think you'll see any difference by placing it in a container. I've used more than half of a bag and frequently clean my powerheads, etc and I haven't found any magnetic particles.

Holy hell, good thing I checked the DIY 5gal Skimmate locker outside, it almost overflowed! It doesn't have any fancy auto shutoff. I think it has been in use for about 2 months. Nasty!

LOL. I'm lazy, the thought of cleaning the DT of all the mud that I purposely added...just sounds like a lot more work that I don't need. I figured that the critters in the sump is going to love that mud bed, they are going to dig around and stir it up for me. There is actually pretty good flow through the return section, so whatever bacteria (if any) in the mud will make it into the display. Will probably just take longer, but I'm not in a hurry.

Do you run an ICP? I heard some mud have high metals like iron, tin or aluminum. That’s why I’m going to go slow. And I want to be able to pull it easily if there are any problems. But so far, no one has anything bad to say about AF Life Source except it’s got some metallic material…which might be a problem for getting into pumps.
I have not run ICP recently as I am going to to be switching out my main display tank and stand in the next month or so, so I don't see the point right now. For now I just keep an eye on the big 5 NO3, PO4, Ca, Mg, K (editALK). I read many reviews and experiences from R2R and some from older RC stuff before using the product. I couldn't find anyone reporting issues with overdosing of trace elements and in fact found a few reports were people had to dose iron in order to keep their cheato growing even while using this product. I don't think its quite as magical as all of the claims but I have not experienced any ill effects due to its use.

I didn't hear back from AGE about the metal trim. But I'm thinking stainless steel, professional fabrication, welding, powder coating and oversized shipping will be too costly. So this becomes a DIY project.

I'll head to Home Depot and Lowes tomorrow to pick up what I need to make the copycat version. I want to make it out of metal. Should be fun.

Added a couple new tangs and chromis. I had to catch them with a swimming pool net in the seller's tank. LOL. That's a first, never had to catch a fish that I'm buying. If I would have used a normal net for fish tanks, I don't think I would have caught them so quick.

Oh boy, it's like the Thunderdome in the tank right now. Lots of fishes chasing and fighting. My small desjardini tang fins are all torn up.

I fed heavy and added the mirror to the tank trick. Hopefully it settles down.

The pink micro goniopora and 1 of my torches is not doing well. The pink goni color has faded. But I have goni at the bottom of the tank, and PAR is very low. The torch's tentacle is getting very thin and it looks bad. I'm definitely unhappy about this. I took all of the torches out and gave it a chemiclean/lugol's dip overnight. I also turned down the flow. And I'm going to target feed them more. I don't want to loose these corals. I don't know what is going on. The major water parameters are all in range and stable.

Cal: 440
Alk: 8.6
Mg: 1420
Phosphate: 0.03
Nitrate: 6.7

I'm going to stop dosing everything except 2-part, and sending out an ICP this week. I'm probably doing too much tinkering right now. Maybe a good water change will help. But I will wait for ICP to come back.

it used to be very full, now it looks thin and limp. Photo is after overnight dip, I think it looks a little better, but could be just my wishful thinking.

Most of the fishes have settled down, and I think there was a lot of activity last night because the new fishes were trying to figure out where their sleeping spot is. And the existing fishes were defending their territory. During the day, I see some tangs chasing, but nothing that is too concerning.

I know other people keep way more fishes, but I think I'm done with adding fishes for awhile, the tank is at fully capacity with 16 fishes. I'm keeping an close eye for any signs of fish disease in the next month. I'm running the UV 24/7 for the next few weeks, and then turn it back to a lower scheduled timing once all is clear.

Here is my fish list.

Clowns: Black Ice clown and a True Percula clown. I was hoping they would pair up, but they sleep on opposite corners of the tank. Not host anything since I don't have an anemone. The black ice clown has a very distinct coloring on its tail that looks like a Pac-man, so that's his name "Pac-man". And were hoping they would pair, so we can call her "Ms. Pac-man". Oh well, you can't force love.

Flame Hawkfish: Funniest fish in the tank. He darts in and out of rockwork to snatch food. He just waddles around, zooming up to the water surface for no reason and sit on powerheads. And he would stare at you. His name is "Googly eyes" for obvious reasons.

Springeri Damsel: Pretty azure blue and black patterns. He is territorial about his rock. Kids named him "Hale'akala". A good fish for pest control if they pop up. Many LFS keep them in their frag tanks, and one of the lesser aggressive damsels.

Cooper's Anthais: Pink and fast. Always hungry and likes to blow up his mouth. Kids named her "Pinky Pie".

Royal Gramma: Cool fish. Just chillin. Gets along with everyone. Such unique color in 1 fish.

Yellow Coris Wrasse: Since I don't want to pay for a post-Hawaii ban yellow tang prices, this fish has a great bright yellow. Cool fish that just picks on the sand all day long. Another great fish for pest control especially those flatworms which took over my 1st tank.

Mandarin Goby: One of my favorite fishes. I could not keep one before because you had to feed it pods and it wasn't readily available as it is today. But this one actually eats pellets and flakes, and I have a big enough tank now with plenty of copepods. I still need to check if it is male or female. Just a beautiful fish. This one likes to hide and very shy, but fat and happy. One of the main reasons I have a sand bed.

Blue/Greem Chromi: There are 3 of them, and one is bigger and dominant. Kids named them "The 3 Musketeers". I really like how they school together and just simple nice fishes.

Tang Gang:
  • Desjardini Tang - Smallest of the bunch. Gets picked up since he is the smallest, but he is the most fierce in getting food. Always with a fully belly. The kid's named him "Lil Yachty".
  • Scopas Tang - He's the biggest one, and likes to throw his weight around. He likes to chase the Desjardini around. He tried to tail spike some of the other tangs to establish his dominance. We call him "The Godfather".
  • Powder Blue Tang - The 2 powder tangs like to chase each other. Hopefully, that's all...we'll see when they get bigger. Just a must have tang for any fish tank.
  • Powder Brown Tang - He's fearless. New to the tank, and he was just cruising already. The colors are even better than the powder blue in my opinion.
  • Naso Tang - This is the fish that my wife loves. Tried to QT 2 blond nasos myself previously, and both didn't make it through QT. At first, I thought I was doing something wrong with QT, but it seems to be hobby wide that Nasos have poor survival through QT (plus dewormer). I highly suspect it is the Prazi / GC that is the issue. But I can't prove it. So far, this naso has been really cool and swimming around happily. Not fighting with any of the other tangs, just doing his thing cruising around

With your PO4 being 0.03, I would consider that near zero and probably why some of your corals aren't happy. Try to feed your fish more (smaller meals throughout the day), auto feeders are handy for this. I think the additional fish will help, but adding more food will help too.

More food sounds good to me because I really enjoy feeding them. I'm already feeding pretty heavy. And I have an auto feeder going 4 times during the day with a mix of pellets and freeze dried food. I also feed nori sheet and a couple cubes of frozen. I feed flakes and pellets whenever I'm around the tank.

What are you feeding and how often?

My auto feeder has NLS pellets (standard & algae max) which feeds 3x a day, I feed LRS twice a day (once in the morning & evening), I feed TDO pellets twice a day (sometimes just once) and I feed Cool Green & Cool Mysis flakes once a day. I'm not a huge fan of mysis because you have to rinse it, but LRS is great stuff and doesn't require rinsing. I do skip some feedings here and there, but this is my routine when I'm home all day. I know this sounds like a lot to people, but I'm not throwing in huge chunks of food, these are smaller portions that get eaten rather quickly, which is the key.

I feed a bit more. I feed a whole sheet of nori, sometimes more. And 2-3 cubes of frozen. This is on top of the pellets and flakes on the autofeeder 4x per day, and also whenever I'm around the tank I throw in pellets/flakes. I also put in some coral food from Brightwell, freeze dried calanus, oyster feast. All the tangs have full stomachs, it is literally bulging. LOL.

My corals do not look happy. Some are losing color. I think it is just a result of an immature tank. I have added some Salifert amino acid to see if it helps.

that's probably the biggest skimmate collection I've ever seen LOL. Smell must be horrific
It was horrible. It stunk up the whole house, Luckily, the kids and wife were out, and I opened up all of the windows. I wasn't even going to look at the skimmate locker because I assumed it would be maybe half full, but I kicked it...and I can see a bit of skimmate come up through the carbon on the top. LOL.
