Look at this BS on the bottom of my Garf Bonsai! I caught my emerald crab eating away at the SPS! Now I have to catch that mofo.

If extra feeding doesn't help you can throw a bottle trap in there with a chunk of shrimp. You should catch him in a day or 2. You will also probably catch every bumble bee snail, shrimp and bristle worm.....lol

That's weird, I broadcast feed pellets and flakes, 1 sheet of nori and 2 cubes of frozen mysis every day. I would think there is plenty of food. Hell, my nitrates and phosphates are really high right now, and I'm battling to just to keep from skyrocketing.

Was it just the bonsai or other acropora? Maybe it was just cleaning up the dead area?

For now, just the bonsai. At first, I dread the thought it was AEFW, but the marks are not similar to those. These were like something bigger and deep bite marks. Then I decided to look after lights out, and sure enough, the emerald crab is grabbing at the base. I can't tell if it is just eating dead tissue, but he looked like he as chomping away. Either way, I may try to catch the crab and give him a timeout in the sump.

Cyano is still outbreaking, and on my sand and some rocks. I tried the whole bacteria dosing with DIY coral snow, and even injecting bacteria into the sand. I have to say it has been ineffective so far. The best method is still manual removal into a filter sock.

Im going to start stirring my sand bed in sections, and follow it up with DIY coral snow. At least this will help me get rid of some detritus, which I think the cyano really likes. I’m also thinking about getting more sand snails and conches to help stir up the sand bed.

I bought this favia at the CFM last year. It was in the $10 bin, and my son really liked it. It was yellow and glow under blues, so we picked it up. It was the size of a pencil eraser. The vendor said it was a Fascination Favia.

We took it home and stuck it on a plug and kept it on the sand. It grew well for us. This is the same Favia today encrusted the whole rock, and one of our favorites as the green came in late. I bought a WWC Ultron favia (really a micromussa) for $40 from CFM this year and stuck it on the back bottom rock. We like the aqua blue color center.

I definitely need to get a few conches.

My tank is not doing well, I see more STN/RTN on my SPS. So I don't know what is going on.

Sorry to hear man - I know the feeling. Even easy stags didn’t do well for me either but I can blame it on “tank maturity”. However, yours is older than mine so should be more stable right?

Sent ICP yet?

My alk and calcium consumption has basically dropped to zero, so I know something is not right. One of my SPS is RTN from the base up, and fragged the tip to try to save it. The base is bone white already. I may send in another ICP just to see what the heck is happening. Very strange. I doubled checked all the major things I can test for, and all looks good. pH is 8.3, alk 9, cal 420, mag 1390, nitrates 16, phosphates 0.15.

I'm out of salt, so I need to get another bucket. /sigh

Think I'll be splitting white worms on Wednesday. I'll put a quarter in a Styrofoam cup for you. Think you can make it to Irvine sometime this week?

No changes to my water source.

I'm getting some STN on my SPS from the base up, which is very strange. I lost a couple frags, some that are hardy. I quickly did a 20% water change just in case.

What is interesting is that I'm getting some dinos on my sand (looks to be LCA), and I don't have low nutrients. And I still have cyano as well. Maybe this is the curse of having sand. Probably too much detritus stuck in the sand. Now I'm supposed to dose silica? Boy, this is like a chemistry experiment. I just remove all the silica from my RODI water, and now I'm adding it back in...ugh.

I really need to send in another ICP.

On the positive note, I swear some of my aiptasia is gone. Maybe it's the 2 berghia I put in a couple months ago. I've never seen any berghias though. I even look at night when lights are out.

Also, I got some white worm from local reefer (Thanks Jojosreef!). But I already screwed it up by not sterilizing the new potting soil, so I see lots of gnats in the soil culture. Damn! I tried to save some white worm to restart a new culture, so let's see if I screwed it up or not.

It can take berghia months before you see any impact on aiptasia, especially with just two. Hopefully things will turn around for you soon. Reefing is essentially just solving problems. Have you tried dosing/adding PNS Probio or another PNSB?

You read my mind.

I recently had some Coolia dinos pop up in my newly established frag tank. I dosed a bottle of PNS deep purple substrate inoculum over the course of 2 weeks. I had my doubts but since dosing that stuff 2 months ago my tank is algae and dino free. I'm fairly certain that I have a sustaining colony in my tank at this point because everytime I pull a frag or rock out of the tank I can smell the PNS bacteria(it has a very distict odor).

This is what I used.
