I dont have the funds for a chiller at the moment and with summer at an all time high right now. I am wondering if i can stick some purified Ice in my sump near my return line to keep my tank cool temporarly. My tank is averaging about 80-82degrees during the day and 78degrees in the night nothing crazy but i do want to lower my temp. Right now what im doing is keeping my fan all day seems to be holding down the temperatue but im losing water like crazy. tank size is 45gal, rimless. 20 gal sump

thanks,
Bryant

You could add fans that will aid in evaporation but with that size tank I'd only do it if you have an ATO. The bottle with frozen water idea is a pretty good one too.

I use the bottle method sometimes. Recently i have been freezing small "Can't believe its not butter" containers of RODI and just sit them in my sump. 1 block of ice will bring my temp down 1.5-2 degrees. I have a 130 DT and 40 sump.

I've been running fans but this week been floating water bottles with frozen tank water. 82 is not bad imo; I keep my tanks around 80-82 during the summer.

How often are you having to swap out ice bottles? I did that and it thawed out fairly quickly

I just picked up the aquatek 4 fan unit from amazon for like $38, I get it tomorrow, hopefully that will keep my temps at bay so the fans dont have to be on 24/7. Right now im just using a single fan unit.

Before I got my chiller I used the fan and frozen water method. It worked well enough. The water does evaporate a bit more. I have an extra 1/4hp chiller if anyone needs one?

when I am at work, fan is my only option. When I am home, 1 gallon of frozen RO/DI + some Baking soda or Lime water, will bring down your tank temp faster than Fan.

Let us know how it works. I'm tempted but at RAP these are usually on sale and I think they're cheaper.

Anyone know if it's better to have the fan blow on the DT or the sump? I know it would look better in the sump but would fanning the DT work better?

I believe the dt would be better, more surface area to blow across thus better cooling imho
