This is a continuance thread from my other thread; suffice to say I have an 1969 house in yorba linda 92886 that needs a lot of work and I am looking to trade some or all of the labor costs for coral/gear

http://www.reefdiscussion.com/forums/showthread.php?p=92503#post92503

Cost of the copper is close to $2000k; I can treanch the hole to the house from the city water supply

Any plumbers here?

We are by YL city hall; like right down the street

How much work are you having done?

I am confident that most plumbers who are licensed do a quaility job, a lot of it is little stuff like wiping down the flux so your pipes don't corrode immediately

I am going to have the entire house plumbed via the attic so 90% of the pipe will be above ground and indoors; should not be a corrosion issue beyond the standard issues with municipal water

For the run to the house I want 1" flex copper pipe but am a little concerned about soil ph; do you know where the soil ph in this part of oc is at?

This is what my father in law did, personally I don't even like to drink from plastic water bottles so the thought of running my family's water supply through pvc or cpvc does not rub me the right way

For get about copper go with pex line!!!
I'm not big on the idea of soft pipe in a wall although a lot of new houses have this type of system. Copper is tried & true and will last 50 years if treated properly; after that the house will be my son's problem!

I also wonder about the resale on a pvc plumbed house, seems like putting some bumper stickers on a bmw to me but I might just be getting old lol =)

Right on, is there anything you hate about the area I should know about? lol!

It is quite an upgrade for us, Fullerton is only a few miles away but a world apart!

I like copper to but if you think about it your water comes from the city anyways so either way its passing through a piece of plastic. Pex is durable all the way around and will out last eveything but I am not knicken down copper or anything pex is just better I always recommend it to my customers. As for schedual 80 for your main feed you may want to go with copper but schedual 80 is tuffer and wont break untill you have a earthquake. I am from florida and pex has been around for years their and its new to california but is most certainly fast and easy to replace and you can do it yourself. I hope you get a good plumber not all licensed ones are good if I wasnt 6hrs away I would love to help!!! Dont forget to look who ever you get up on the bbb!! Good luck,

Good to know, It definitely hasn't changed much because a lot of the original owners are still here and there are not many apartments which ebbs the flow of riff-raff into the area/schools

Down where I am in Fullerton near commonwealth/state college there are tons of old, low cost apartments and the schools around here with the exception of Troy are pretty done!

Once we get settled in we have to meet up, I am right there on casaloma between imperial and YLB

The thought of heated water passing through plastic piping is more concerning, there has to be some chemicals imparted to the water. It is less concerning though because I RO all our drinking water so exposure would be minimal

So; with pex is it just like spaflex? Do you simply roll out each flexible run to each outlet within the house? I might consider doing it if I can get it done for less cash by installing much of it myself and hiring a pro to do the connections and street to main run

Hey,
Here is some info on PEX for you in california http://www.californiapex.com/?tag=safe-drinking-water-act . I would also like to add you can get shark bite fittings wich involve no crimping and they just snap together http://sharkbite.com/ . I would look into it these systems are even popular in austrailia. Here is a list of tools you will need and connections:
Brass fittings (safe ones that are bad water proof)
Metal crimpo rings
Crimp tool

Or Shark bite fitings wich come in a set ( I recommend ) but they can be expensive.

Do you know how many feet you will need and what angle you will need on the drop?? Also the shark bites will attach to copper as well no soldering and if they fail shark bite will replace them for you....

We went to lowe's today and I saw some pex, I was expecting spaflex but it is more stiff like thinwall pvc, interesting!

The sign at lowe's said that it is not for drinking water systems so it may have been the heating line

did some more research on pex and found this:
http://www.chemaxx.com/polytube1.htm

Easily chewed through by rodents and imparts gasoline like chemicals to water for first year or more depending on how often it is intentionally flushed;very interesting!

Also found out it was approved in CA in august 2009 and that a lead free brass initiative starts on jan1 2010...very interesting
