Hey all,

I have been a little inactive for awhile since I had a new baby but now that everything is settling down I would like to add /consolidate my two Nanos into one 20-30g tank.

I need advice on the filtration. Most Nanos have the all in one with the media at the back. Question is, are those media better than a strong hang on the back protein skimmer? I will stock it lightly maybe 2 clowns and just focus mostly on a minimalistic approach. I will have a sand bed and live rock for sure. I don't have space for a sump cause if I did I would use one.

Welcome and congrats with the newborn. My son is turning 4 months tomorrow and I can say having a reef tank and a newborn sure is a handful. As for an advice for your nano tank. Maximize your water volume out of your nano. Are you planning to purchase a new nano tank or use what you have?

I myself have a 22g display with a 12g sump below. A good protein skimmer helps but doing smaller and more often water changes is better. Also if you don't own an ato, I suggest you invest in a good one.

Hi Scott, congrats on the newborn.
Some reefers will recommend weekly waterchange, but if you can get extra skimmer then it is good too. Aquamaxx is good candidate.
Carbon bag, and purigen also good option.

dorkymk3 I am planning to maximize the water volume for sure. So yes minimal livestock and maximum filtration as possible. I'll be relying on mostly porous live rock and a high rated skimmer. I'm familiar with the tanks limit when it comes to WCs frequency/volume. Do you think I can get away without the media/back filters and just go with the skimmer?

NVTE thank you, do you still work for quest? As for water changes I'll be doing bi weekly of up to 50% WCs. Weekly just isn't going to cut it with the time I have. The carbon bag is probably the only media that I like to use. Purigen does little for me and does get exhausted quite fast from my past experience. So if I have to then maybe I'll run an external filter just to hold the media because I'm not planning to run a sump.

No longer with them bro.
Sound like skimmer and carbon are good option for you. You can fill the back filter with porous rubble rock, or those marine ceramic block.

Maybe a good protein skimmer and mini bio-pellet. Reactor will help you in the long run.
I still have a biopellet reactor that can easily fit in a nano. I'm looking at a lot of these IM lagoon fusion and those look really nice too.

I currently have an aqueon evolve 8. I do 30% water changes every 5-6 days and switch out carbon every 2-3weeks. No skimmer. Just started trying out chaeto. The hardest to keep coral I have is red digi and it's growing well.
