You will need flow to keep the sand clean so cyano doesn't build up and on the rocks too. Fish like to swim in the current to. Not absolutely necessary but probably will be a problem without it.

Got a free koralia for ya. Not sure if it works though I will see

Thanks and yes it's a hassle to keep cycling the sand around. And yes I would totally like it. There are some awesome pics of tanks and man I want mines looking close to those.

wave makers don't make flow IMO. well I should say some do and most don't. they do make waves but the water just moves back and forth and not a flowing motion. you need power heads for flow. waves are better for sps corals.

I would say yes because you dont want the debris to settle and build up. You want it suspended so it gets picked up by a filter or overflow.

To answer your question, fish only tanks with rock work will need water flow and not necessarily random water flow....i.e wavemaker. My advice is to try multiple power head and aim them in different area of the tank to create the random active water flow.
