So I will be finishing a stand that I am building for my new tank soon. Unfortunately I am not good at staining nor do I have a lot of free time to do so. I am looking for someone that is well versed in staining and finishing stands. The stand is made of birch, 46 x 24 X 32 and fairly basic. I live in Claremont. If anyone has any references they would like to share I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

Do you have any photos? Aquarium stands are not like standard furniture. Staining them does not often work out for the best. You want a waterproof finish. Best is epoxy seal with epoxy paint. Spar varnish is a second best and can work pretty well with stain - but it will not hold up like epoxy will. Forget about untreated/uncoated stain or paint - you will regret it.

thank you for the info. I will keep that in mind. I may end up doing it myself to make it is done right.

If you decide you want to go with epoxy, I can recommend these guys.

http://www.aeromarineproducts.com/bar-top-epoxy.htm

They're down in SD and if you order UPS I almost always get it next day in the OC. I've used gallons of his stuff for a large number of projects and in my opinion he has the best epoxy you can buy - PLUS awesome customer service. No, I don't work for him :)

You'll end up with a fingernail polish hard surface.

I've used epoxy seal and epoxy paint on my concrete outdoor koi pond and 12 years later the finish is still perfect - even in full sun and fully underwater for 12 years.
