Still not completely satisfied with the middle. But because of my nitrate and phosphate issue I added more black sand, another 15 lbs LR and over last 2 days, did a 100g water change. Then added more Dr tims and more gfo.

So just an update:

Last week, I did a total water change of 125g spaced over 5 days. Immediately after the first 50G I noticed the blastos and acans fattening up. Over the subsequent 50G, and another 25G water change, my Gonis were extending far, mushrooms, nems, and rics brightened up and has very noticeable color improvement. The zoos that I had were opening up and coloring a lot more as well. I just tested this morning, Phos is .5, Nitrates are at 40.

In response to the Phos, I added more Aquamaxx GFO; regarding Nitrates...well, I do have a heavy bioload (20 total fish) so I presume its to be expected. However, I will implement either 15G weekly water changes, or 30G biweekly WCs (not really sure what's the preferred method for stability).
Salinity is 1.026,
Ammonia and Nitrites are all 0.
Mag 1450
Cal 480
dKh 9.8
pH fluctuates from 7.8-8.1 via Apex
Temp has been maintained between 78-80degrees.

I do 15 gallons every week, the smaller the water change the less your parameters will swing

This is only the case if your w/c parameters are not the same as the tanks in small or large . At first 30gal w/c with matching the parameters so you bring no3 down and after they drop to desire level, then do 15% to maintain. I know people that do big w/c and small and both ways work.

Not a lot of people test their saltwater before adding it, that's me haha :p so I do less :)

no matter if its 6 gal or when i had my 1300 gal system, i learned quick that stability is key.

Yup! I use d&d for 2 years now, haven't had issues. I know with lower quality salt the parameters are more iffy. But I agree testing before adding anything to your system is important.

I filled my tank with Coralife; if I'm just doing WCs with Coralife, do I still "need" to test? I realize it's important, however, if its the same brand, is it as necessary?

I never test. I tested to establish and set parameters at what water I buy. Since then I have never tested... call me lazy.

John, Good luck with your new CBB. Hopefully he will be your aptasia answer.
Thanks

I hope it works out. I'm In the process of catching the Pt and yt cause they're punking the cbb.

My friend is willing to trade his blue tang for my pt. I'm unsure if I want to add a smaller pt as well
