Well I switched out my old cfl bulb for a new Phillips 5000k led. It cost almost $50 at Home Depot.

I've read alot of people saying that led lights made their chaeto grow 2x-3x faster. I'll let everyone know how it works out.

I have a 12-3w DIY led kit, but I got lazy. Hahaha. I figure if this one does good, then I'll build the DIY kit.

This bulb is a lot more concentrated then the cfl bulb. Kinda nice, because I would get alot of algae growing inside my skimmer, and it was a pain to clean it. U can see in the pic there's not alot of light spillage. Prolly get better coverage with 2 bulbs.

Dont wanna hijack here but I just recently read the same thing about the LEDs so I bought this one...

I was planning on purchasing the one below but the one on ebay came with hanging hardware. Big deal but it saved me a few bucks.

SOOPER BRIGHT! Seriously had a blind spot for a few minutes after I stared into it. Very basic and cheap plastic housing but i could care less. If the unit holds up, I will be very happy with it. I guess we will see how good the growth is with pure blue light.

Ill try to remember to give an update once I see growth.

I went from a DIY 6 LED 3 cool white and 3 royal blue to a costco LED flood light Par38. I have the say that my DIY LED grew cheato way faster. So I build another 6 LED for my Fuge plus I can have frags in my sump/fuge now.

Thanks for the info! I'm doing my research to start my first reef. I'm looking to do a Mr. Aqua 12g Long and I'm torn on whether or not I need a sump

I don't think blue LEDs will be good for growing chaeto. Most people say 4500k-6500k is the best. Strait blue led would be like 20000k or 24000k.

Also thanks for the advice about the 6 led DIY setup grew chaeto faster. I'll probably end up building mine in a month or so.

There it is. Gotta put up my Torohump leds in my sump next weekend. Two birds one stone. (Frag station and macro farm.

I run a 12 3w DIY LED. 4 Cool white, 4 warm white, 2 blue, 2 UV. IMO, I think more of a full spectrum increases growth.
