Hey folks new to the boards trying to do as much research as possible before I dive in. I'm still a long way off because I'm in the process of buying a house and don't want to commit yet to the hobby if I have to move soon.

I've loved aquariums for a long time now. And having just gotten back from Monterey over the labor day weekend my interest is always renewed after a trip to an amazing aquarium like the one in Monterey. Reef central just declared their reefer of the year award and she described her first tank as a little three gallon setup that only had sand in it. Yet the life that grew just in the sand bed was amazing. I'm thinking I'll try that just to tide me over until I can get a real tank.

Welcome Paul!

Well you're right to thoroughly research this wonderful hobby before you jump in! Ask every question you have, that's the only way to learn. Have a good sense of humor, we like to kid around in our responses. We are a TIGHT group here, some would even say family. You're going to like it here!

Post pics when you finally do set up a tank. Good luck with the house search, I just bought a house last year and it is STRESSFUL!!!!!!

Welcome! If you are looking at buying a house put the hobby off, that way you can plan the tank our more and find a place for the right size tank in your house.

Go big the first time, it'll save you money and time since you'll just upgrade later on.

Welcome, Paul! well your off to a great start! I wish I knew about these forums before I started... could have saved a lot of lives AND money! Remember to ask lots of questions and ALWAYS get second opinions when you think something doesn't sound right.

Welcome to SCR Paul.... Great place to be in. If you want a little taste with this wonderful hobby start with a small nano tank, or you can just continue researching after the move to your new dream house and start with a large reef tank. Just know, the more water volume the tank is. The more stable the reef tank will be.

Thanks everyone. Let me apologize first if I accidentally ask questions that have been previously asked.

Welcome Paul! Glad you are doing the research first. I would hold off or buy something used and small. When you buy the tank you want, go as large as you can because the itch for the upgrade will hit you fast. Plus the larger the tank, the more options for fish you have.

+1!!!! I went from a 10g > 24g > 60g > now working on setting up my 180g!

Bigger is easier! but its also a lot more expensive

Can anyone recommend a good lfs in the San Gabriel valley? I have heard of one in the San Fernando valley but don't want to make that drive.

Hey, Paul. Welcome.

Pasadena Tropical Fish (PTF) is the best, closest LFS. Steve is the owner and he is a good guy. It's not a place to get high end equipment or even really high end corals but he has some good stock, water and the odds and ends you will need without making a drive.

It's on Colorado across the street from Ganahl lumber.
