I ended up getting one of these since my api test color is off

I used those as well. I just wish they made them to read higher concentrations. All and all I am a big fan of fishless cycling as it really allows you to push the ammonia level way farther than you could with anything living in there.

I did almost the exact same thing. Loaded my tank with bottled bacteria (3-4 different kinds) and added vinegar/vodka (carbon), and let it cook. Also got into a bacterial bloom. I think we have same line of thinking to start a tank with dead rock/sand.

Yup get the tank nice and seeded. Next step will be to add phytoplankton and pods. I’ll know the tank is ready when I see pods on the glass.

Do whatever you can to avoid dinos in the first couple months. All that new rock and sand is a blank canvas right now. That's the biggest risk of setting up new tank with dead rock and sand. I also loaded my tank with bacteria, pods, phyto to try to out-compete the nuisance stuff. Take your time and let it seed.

For sure. This is the second tank I set up with dry everything. Learned a lot from the last. Not planning on transferring until June or July. I’m not in a rush. I have plenty of bacteria and ammonia I plan to get through before I start thinking about putting anything in it.
