Because check valve eventually fail. Even the y valves have failed me. What has worked for me 100% is drilling a small hole on the return to break the siphon

I have not had any fail me yet. I suppose my turn will come. I suppose it may be because mine are cycled daily turning the return off and on during feeding. Perhaps I will learn my lesson someday but, as of now my return nozzles are not deep enough to over flow the sump if the check valves should fail.

Now I'm looking at it, that's a pretty long span on that stand. Might want to check with a stand builder just in case if you need a center post.
I got this tank from chance and he had it on a similar stand. I just made this stand a little taller and with cross beams on the floor. This is an old school tank. Back in the day people used to put cinder blocks at the corners and call it a stand haha. I think it’ll be fine because the tank isn’t very tall.

The cycling on off definitely helps

So far no leaks after a few hours. I’m going to fill it up tonight and run the return pump. On Saturday I’ll throw in a bag of citric acid to clean the dead coraline and the pumps on the skimmer and the carx. On Sunday I’ll drain it rinse it and start cycling at some point

Sweet! No leaks. I like how the returns are pushing water towards the overflow without the piping showing.

Man! There was a leak. But it was a gasket on one of the 1 inch bulkheads. So far it looks like we’re good to go. Installed a gasket backwards doh!

The piping is showing. It’s in the tank. It has 4 returns but I’m only using the 2 on the end so the tank runs as a raceway

No leaks! And I’m done scrubbing the the inside of the tank. There was a small are I couldn’t get to because of the return pipe. Needed circulation so I put the red dragons to work

With any luck I’ll be draining soon and I’ll start to rinse the sand. After that is rock scape and fill with rodi…. Or should I mix salt water and then put it in the tank?

I have seen it done both ways but the mechanic in me is a stickler for following instructions. I am pretty sure all salt mixes recommend mixing the water before adding it to the tank. Then again if you don't have anything else in there???

Maybe I’m overthinking this. My concern it that if I do rodi first then add salt, the water in the rock and sand will not match the sality in the water column. Does that make sense? Am I crazy?

I think over the course of a day or 2 it would work itself out. The main reason I tink the salt makers want it premixed is to avoid anything settling, or precipitating out of the mix before itbis fully dissolved. This is probably less of an issue on the initial fill as you are not quite sustaining life and your balance will be off anyways.
