I bought a used 150 gal. & it has two 1.5" holes on upper back wall.was used as drains with just a hose 4 a return.
are 1.5" holes 2 big 4 returns?
would you run it as is?
my old set up had 2 returns on back wall with center overflow.
any suggestions would b greatly appreciated.still

sounds promising

drilling the holes was the hardest part... im partial to SPS tanks with 50-100x tank volume turn over so I would...

one of the 1.5 inch drains I would run at full siphon as a closed loop with a reefflow dart 3000-6000 gph returning via 2x .75inch returns over the top regulated by oceans motion 2 way... you'll need this to be 1-2 inches lower than the other drain, which you can do via an internal 90' elbow and strainer pointing down from the bulkhead

the other 1.5 drain I would cover with 3inch tall overflow box with teeth. It would gravity drain to sump/skimmer/filtration and return over the top via a slower reeflow pump (2000-4000 gph), split via 2x .75inch returns via oceans motions 2 way...

total of 4 returns...you would not need any internal powerheads.... ok maybe 1-2 vortecs if you're doing SPS...

what a out leaving 1 hole a 1.5" drain with elbow & strainer & other hole reducing to 1" return. What you guys think?

no problem... but hmmm...

The old debate of closed loop versus internal powerheads has never been settled. it sounds like someone wants to sell you powerheads... the benefits of a closed loop are many and havent changed...

IMO, there is no need to reduce drain sizes. losta people would die for 2inch drains...initially people may feel uncomfortable with large drains.

Also, I would highly recommend a covered overflow with teeth for anything that goes to an open system, like a sump. A simple strainer will get clogged and you will pump your entire sump volume into the DT if the sump isnt setup right...

good luck!

maybe but I buy my equipment online.
I don't want 2 reduce drain.reduce return?
but that makes alot of sense what you said about drain clogging & emptying sump.
I wanna get it drilled with a center overflow but tank is crazy HEAVY & I'm screwed if it breaks as no one insures there work
that I have found.SCARY STUFF
