I have been using Tropic Marin Pro Reef for years. I have used all types of salt and even switched to scripps for awhile but always end up coming back to tropic marin. So here is my question, the tropic marin bio-actif has been out for awhile. Does anyone use it and is it worth the little extra it costs over pro reef to switch?

Yes to agree with Jose it can help with certain issues but can not be stored for long periods. It’s a mix and use after clear type salt. Using pro and doing multiple then beginning doing more frequent water changes can achieve the same thing but be made in much larger batches to be stored for longer periods.

So here is my experience and limited knowledge on TM Bioactif. I only used one bucket and my sps did not respond well. Did a little more research, which I should have done in the first place, and bioactif is best used in conjunction with the TM balling method. Check it out and do some more research because the last time I looked was several years ago and this hobby changes by the second.

Why would you need to do? Why would the balling method make a difference?

You know what, I can't really explain why. I was looking for a thread from years ago where there was this discussion and a member emailed TM and they replied back with something along the lines of athough not necessary it is recommended. I tried to do a search on the site but nothing came up. Doing a quick Google search also came up empty within the first couple of sites but it would be something I would dig into if I was considering switching.

Doesn’t it contain bacteria that brings your nutrient down low? Or some sort of carbon dosing. It would probably be good for setting up a new tank?

Its contains a carbon to eliminate the need for separate dosing of a carbon source.

Actually Lou from Tropic marin said it does not drop your parameters. That is a misconception that this is the same as carbon dosing, although it is not. It has dormant bacteria.
There is a youtube video talking about how sps has a poor mechanism for po4 uptake and they uptake bacteria as their source of certain compounds. This would make sense why they recommend the salt for
ULNS because in low concentration diffusion is poor. I wanted to give it a shot because my levels are low and corals are not growing as fast as I feel they should in my stable trident controlled system. Thanks for everyone's input. I'll look for the thread. Any other thoughts or opinions?

Well I pulled the trigger on a bucket lol! I will let you guys know how it goes if you are interested.
I enjoy the nerdy chemistry of this hobby and hopefully understanding it better can help us yield bigger colonies!
