Hello Reefers.
I am in a dilemma, Im about to buy a Reef Octopus skimmer for my 60 gals tank (+ 15 gals in the sump). My biological load is super heavy I will say, I have 8 fish, plus many cleaning crew.
I feed them pellets 4 times a day and frozen food (Rod’s Food) every other day.
Im not 100% sure which one to buy the Reef Octopus 110 SSS or the 150 SSS.
According to the manufacturer and you tube they say I can get away with the 110 SSS, I want to grow sps again (my tank crashed last year due to failing in nutrient export)
Currently my Nitrates are around 15 ppm and phosphate at 0.05 pretty steady.
What do you guys think so I go bigger and buy the 150 SSS?
Does anyone have a similar tank volume and run either one of those 2 options?
Thanks for reading.

Sup bro,

If you consider this a dilemma, I wouldn't mind being in your shoes. lol. Either one will work. As you put it "you can get away with the 110sss". But is that what you want is to get away with something or do you want to go with something that will give you the extra cushion. I personally would aim for the 150sss and tune it down with the controllable DC pump. But 1st and foremost i would base it on Budget because price difference is huge. You can get a used 110sss for $100 -150 that comes up quite often.

I currently run the 220sss on a 150g + 44g sump. Its a new setup and only live stock is 3.5" yellow tang, 2.5" hippo and lieutenant, and 2" clown fish. At first I was questioning the decision and thought it may be overkill but after running it, it seems fine. The skimmate is a wet brown skimmate. It's not thick and black but given the bioload it's understandable. The controller has 5 speeds and i'm currently using the 2nd speed. So just gauging on my own setup, when my tank is fully stocked this skimmer would work like a champ.

Hope that helps.

With your bioload I would suggest the larger skimmer. It is easier to have to dial back a skimmer and have it run 22 hours a day then it is to dial up a small skimmer and have it run 26 hours a day.

The 150 isn't so large that it would not be effective.
