So what do you guys think we'll see in 2016 from the hobby? What kind of technological advances are you hoping for?

Share them here!

As for me, I think that this year Ecotech may introduce an aquarium controller to the industry. I wouldn't be surprised if they've been working on this for years like the Vectra, and that was a well kept secret. I mean, they have the R&D capability and the customer service experience. They can practically control all their products with the ReefLink. Why not expand the EcoSmart technology to probes/sensors and implements some kind of user interface to program modules like the Apex does. The Vectra pump already has a float switch sensor port.

I mean, I know it would take some heavy competition to even match the Apex since it's so advanced and well established, but maybe this EcoTech controller is more geared to the basic user who needs to control pumps, lights, powerheads, and some basic sensors like pH, temperature, etc. Maybe it'll be a controller within the Ecotech ecosystem of products because I have a hard time seeing Ecotech working to make third party lights compatible.

I would also hope that Ecotech enter the skimmer business with the use of the DC Vectra pump. It could bridge the price gap between skimmer brands like ATB and Royal Exclusiv. DC motors are quickly taking over the skimmer market and it makes sense when you can control the motor to regulate the amount of air/turbulence/etc. you want to adjust.

Oh, and another thing I look forward to is the MindStream Aquarium Monitor to come out and change the way we do water tests.

I also a rise in popularity of All-in-One solution systems like the Red Sea line in building aquariums.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. What are your predictions?

Jebao seem like junk. Two to 12 months and poof they quit. I won't consider them for anything at this point.

I do wish mind stream would come out with their product but no one yet knows if it will work or for how long. It is most definitely exciting but don't want to spend $500 and have it break down.

I like the gyre but I really don't understand how paddle propellers work better than other propellers. I do like the water movement. Miss the turbulent flow a little though.

Someone has to come out with a super algae scrubber sooner or later that isn't messy or big. Thought the arid might be a hit but the company hasn't had an active website for a while. What's up with that that. Read some positive reviews but I guess few people really own one.

Seems like some interest in siporax but not sure about it except for anectodal experience from some heavy hitters.

Hope to see some better understanding of nitrate, phosphate, algae and bacteria interactions. Some of the number guys are starting to raise some interesting ideas

Wish ro/do units would tell you when to replace filters and which one when. I can't see pink on the chlorine test on waste water to determine if the carbon and chloramine filters are shot. I have tds meters built in but are they reliable, who knows. And we live and die by our water.

I think there will be new amino acid products. There are things that create a feeding response in corals and sure would like to zoom in on that. Remember the old interceptor, it would make crazy polyp extension. I tried dog food but apparently that is not what sps crave.

Would love to see a cheat detector on photos. Did you guys see on the other forum where Jason Fox starts a hype thread on an unreleased coral. Photo taken by a photographer. Picture sure looks cooked or at least under weird lighting. The photographer can't remember what lighting he took the picture under but promises to reshoot it. Weird. I think people are going to get better and better at shooting pictures and videos under intense blue lighting whether one likes it or not.

Well I for one have been waiting for this water testing thingamajig for a while, it's a phenomenal idea but seems like a pipe dream. I'm a diehard Neptune fan, always trying to add their equipment, they always seem to be doing more so I look forward to their new innovations. I hope they start making pumps like the vectra. Or some kool algae cleaning device that docks itself but is tiny and tucks itself away with know ever seeing it!

You got some high hopes here. Not saying that you're wrong, cause I wish to see similar stuff that you are envisioning. To enter such market is a bold move and also needs to make sense business wise. I'm not too sure about AIO. Such aquariums are already in production and I can't see - in the market - a slot for a new company.. unless said company will provide it at a significant price reduction and thus, take all of competitor's business.

Interesting! I'm looking to seeing this thread develop and reading other opinions.

T5's and Metal Halides will cease production and LED's will rule the world! :top:
Man.. you should interview for sales rep position for any aquarium LED company. I just ordered new leds for my new tank. 1 paycheck down the drain and many more to go

Jebao may be junk but their "niche" in the market isn't to provide quality product and customer service.. it's for the users that want the cheapest and economical product available with some trending technology.. (i.e. gyre style wavemaker, dc return pump, magnet instead of suction for glass attachment.. etc.)

My gyre broke down (I believe) around 2-3 months when I bought it brand new in box. When I contacted CS it was quite hard to get my warranty verified and the parts I received in the mail came slow and also weren't the right pieces. I had to figure out myself which part was broken because they kept telling me that it was the part they sent... clearly not. I expected more when I decided to shell out a considerable amount for a new pump. BTW, pictures from every angle possible was sent to them, after determining which part I needed, I realized this should have been clear to them from the beginning The warranty verification was also much harder than Ecotech or Kessil, both of which were extremely smooth.

I'm excited to see more news regarding mindstream as well as super algae scrubber. ARID is actually quite a hit from what I've heard. Supposedly, they are quite behind schedule after RB did the article and they are now charging quite a premium for their scrubbers. (I know because I was ready to buy one until I heard the outrageous price). Who knows.. maybe it's worth every penny..

****, I spent all this time typing up a prediction post and realized that it wasn't full of predictions as it was full of facts that will happen. I will say that a lot of you are dead on in your predictions though.

The arid system is just a canister to grow macro algae is it not? Built in light and all that I saw that. But I'm confused on what the really benies are

would like to see more ats and arid system manufacturers and more widespread use to really see if they work and to drive down prices. I need some option other than refugium/sump for nutrient export because I can not get chaeto to thrive no matter what I do.

The real benefit is that you get the same performance as a very large refugium in a compact package. If you notice the Arid is about the same price as a good skimmer as the company really wants to replace your need for s skimmer with the ARID.
