I used it for over a year. I didn't notice one difference after sucking it out for bare bottom. Its just messy. I wouldn't recommend it. Just some live rock, macro algae, and a small power head and that should be all you need. Much easier to clean the detritus.

People generally only use DSB in refugiums or no sand at all. It's the classic intensive vs extensive approach.

No sand=intensive. You can still siphon detritus out of the refugium.
DSB=extensive. Don't you dare siphon the refugium. You'll inadvertently remove the very inverts you're trying to grow.

It's all personal preference. I don't like DSB...I'd rather use a refugium for copepod/macro algae culture and be able to siphon detritus.

There is no right or wrong approach. Everyone has their own preference, it's all about what works for YOU.

And I've seen Leng Sy compare systems with a skimmer and systems with the mud... and I'm not that convinced to be quite honest that its the mud that makes those comparison tanks better but he has a product so of course he will market it in a positive way.

Length Sy came up with miracle mud? Hmmm...interesting...

Indeed...
Yes sir. He is a very knowledgeable and experienced reefer I just don't think the mud is any good. SCMAS did a field trip to his facility in Laguna Niguel or thereabouts.

Miracle mud isn't worth the price to me. I used it for 6 months and didn't see any huge improvement. If you're bent on having sand in the fuge' regular aragonite sand is fine.

im currently using miracle mud...and WOW my tank is a miracle..everything grows twice as fast...hahah NOT

only reason im using miracle mud instead of a deep sand bed, is because of space issues. My refugium is built into my sump, and i dont have a whole lotta room. tried to kill 2 birds with one stone...now i got the mud instead of the DSB....i dont know if it honestly makes a huge difference, but id say if u have the room just go with a DSB....good luck

I'm goin to be setting up my refugium soon and was also wondering the same thing. So if a DSB is used, what type of sand would work best (crushed coral or fine).

Fine so have the anaerobic zone. No O2. Supposedly that is one of the benefits of the mud because it's so dense you are able to accomplish that with an inch or two.

I would go with the DSB with macro algae or "Calaurpa" (I think that's how you spell it) if you can find some. Miracle mud needs to be replaced after six months to a year and that is a pain. Good luck!

Has anyone tried using plain cat litter? For mud do you just use the mud only or mud under/over another substrate

Although I agree with this mostly, if you add a removable tray to replenish the mud after 8 months it can be beneficial. I have talked in depth with the people at Eco tech and there are beneficial minerals that are in the mud. The down side is if not put in a removable tray with handles it is quite messy.

If you do water changes with quality salt every week or two weeks you don't need much else. The mud is mostly for worms and other creatures to have fun. It also releases minerals. The story is that the mud is mined out of super rich in mineral area that I have to keep top secret. The idea a friend had was to make it artificial with all the good minerals leaving out the non beneficial ones. Either way the tests performed by these men proved that the mud tanks (softy and other LPS) did better with it than with out it.

Personally if someone gave me a bunch of bags I'd put it in my sump after building an acrylic rack that I can easily remove. I would like to grow mangroves one day.

I have a dsb in my fuge with LR & macro. I used to have an assortment but I let my chaeto get overgrown & it choked out the others. I didn't know any better when I got the sand originally but I have the fine sand in my fuge & dt. I would recommend it for a dsb in your fuge but NOT in a dt. I don't have sand flying all over the tank but I do get dunes that mound up over time & I hate the way it looks!
