change out 5 gallons at a time and keep checking your salinity every time you add water. you might want to wait a few minutes in between to let it all mix in. as long as you wont have shrimp you'll be ok. just take your time.

My salt level is at 30 and want to lower it at 24 its a 180g how many g should i take out and add fresh rodi
Why do you want to lower your salt level when your only at 1.022 and your trying to drop it to just below 1.018..... You know we want 1.025 for reefs which is around 34 ppt

No it won't. I had a 180 and every time I did a water change I took out 5 gallons from the tank, threw 5 gallons of rodi in the sump, and then poured 2.5 cups of salt in the sump with out any problems. 5 gallons in a 180 is nothing. How is taking out 5 gallons of salt water and throwing in 5 gallons of rodi to lower salinity going to make things worse?

First off if you are throwing salt and mixing it in your sump, you should never give anyone advice. Second his salinity is already low for a reef n perfect for a Fowler, so not even sure why he is trying to drop it.

You think that's bad? Here's more... I mix kalk in a jug and pour it directly into the DT, and I only did water changes once a year IF I felt like it.

15 years in the hobby, lots of research, trying new approaches, and trying unorthodox methods gave me these results

There's my reason for giving advise on this forum. Let's see a pic of yours.

I'm not here to swing "D" I'm here to help out because my experience as a beginner was not very good.

Your barking up the wrong tree here. Everado is one of the best reefers around and has knowledge for days. Just because you haven't heard of it doesn't make it wrong. I want to grow up to be like Everados

I can see you have a awesome tank but when you do that mixing in the sump thing doesn't mean your animals and or corals dont stress something u may need to take in consideration

also it doesn't mean that his actions are not causing some type of stress and may explain past experiences over time

Adrock, I see the concern, I really do. I was scared to do it at first when I started it but 5 gallons in a 180 + the volume of your sump is only about 2.5%. All advise on the forums should be taken with a grain of salt (heh? Heh?) lol and should proceed with caution.

When I did it this way in my 180 I didn't see any animals showing any signs of stress and I had a pair of cleaner shrimp in there. But that's just my experience. Never had any losses when I did it either.

I think it would be nice if the OP would come back to the thread and give a better idea of why he wants to do this. Maybe his tank is empty and he wants to lower the salinity, then he could just do it in one shot no problem.

I think there was confusion above about the 5 gallon water change... I don't think the suggestion was to do the 5 gallon water change as his normal weekly/biweekly water change amount but to change out 5 gallons of old salt water with fresh rodi to slowly lower his salt level so that it doesn't hurt any inverts he may have.
