Hey guys I've been in his hobby for almost 4yrs but recently I ran into a new buddy and showed me a salt mix that makes 200g for about 20$ buck ... Now I've been thinking about it that what's better better and cheaper buying salt mix or buying the Catalina water witch is what I've been doing the whole time ...

Catalina water is okay but it lacks magnesium and calcium. Also about 7.5 on alkalinity. Cheapest salt that is worth using is instant ocean. Which is like 28$ a box when it's on sale for 200 gallon size. Regular price is about 37$ retail.

Make your own and be responsible for your own tank. When you add outside water that's outside problems, potentially.

NSW all the way for me, been using it for +4 years....
Ive heard of both sides causing tank crashes, NSW having high phosphates and other things, but on the flip side I know a couple years back D&D had a few bad buckets of salt and same with TM, people had serious tank crashes.

You going to Scripps or they pump it at your home? The guy I know who exclusively uses NSW has had bacterial blooms and that's about it.

I used Catalina water exclusively for several years, changing 25% every week. I had the best sps growth. For the the last year or so, have been mixing my own, I.o. regular mixed with red sea pro. I am contemplating going back, once my 300 in the garage has been vacated. I will just have to monitor the PO4, ca, and mg better.

Instant ocean its fairly priced, mixes clear in a few hours and the best thing about it is that its numbers are always consistant and have been for years on end not to mention they are probly the oldest company out thats been making synthetic salt mix even most of the top sps guys run instant ocean for the fact that every batch is consistant.

Oceans in Motion delivers 500g for me once a month. I believe the water comes from a research facility in the South Bay

Ya I think they pump of Redondo/Palos Verdes. I asked the driver once. The bloom I'm talking about, baffled my buddy. He paid to have the water tested from his large system.
