That's the key point. Patience really does pay off. I tell customers all the time when they want a $30 polyp from us that if they wanted to be patient they could find it on the forum for $10 if they waited for it to pop up… But because we have it right then, they want it and are willing to pay extra. I will leave this thread alone, just wanted to say a few things in defense of some people I like. Just to give a little perspective from the other side. But everyone knows I'm a jerk.
I remember going in to your store and telling you about getting 5 polyps of darth mauls for $20 bucks one time. We both agreed on how we can get any coral at a great price, just gotta wait it out a little. You're not a jerk man, probably one of the nicest vendors I've been to people just get a little jelly sometimes.

We all suffer because of the max organizers. Vendors have to pay high prices and that translates into high prices for us. Vendors have to drop their prices to compete with the hobbyists. Some vendors made out nicely while others were getting frustrated trying to make a good profit.

I don't understand why the prices for booths were so high and why the prices at the door were so high. I wanted to go Saturday with my wife but since I had already committed to go with someone on sunday it would have been $45 for the weekend just to get in. So I decided to only go on sunday. I'm sure I would have spent more if I went both days.

As far as the show goes I had fun and will always go but I didn't think there was much of a selection. Lot of the same stuff. I'm willing to pay extra than wait a long time but I didn't see many of the pieces that I had lost and was trying to get back. I got a few song and dances for sps that were rare and awesome but they just weren't as nice as the price tag.

Where's the LOVE for my booth!? I had SPS colonies starting at $30... buy 3 SPS frags for $25... Supreme grade rainbow acan for as low as $40.. $10 Favia frags.. list goes on and on....

......only down sided was that we shoved 6 frag tanks and a large fish only tank into a 10 X 10 so our booth got packed easily and anyone that didnt wanna wait moved on to the next :-/...

If their was a prize for most livestock in a 10x10.....we smoked everyone..hahaha, but we booked a 20 x 10 for next year so no worries..

I knew I should of stopped but yeah it was to crowded to look around. I dont think the prices at max were to high, for me it was just the selection alot of the same corals. But yeah it cost me $37 just for me and my gf to attend.

Its funny because I don't see the vendors that consistently do very well at this show complaining or even talking at all on this thread lol. Or on forums at all for that matter.

But then again there are reasons why every year fewer and fewer major players in the industry decline to do this particular show anymore. Including some noticeable local ones :)

I still have fun and enjoy this hobby and I like all the shows! I see friends, nice coral, new equipment, and always find some new jewels for my tank.

I got off a cruise ship Saturday morning and made it strait to the show. Saturday morning was when the top shelf pieces go for top shelf prices, this is the same at all shows. On Sunday afternoon the deals come, patience pays off for those that stay to the end with some cash.

This is an expensive hobby and still is a very specialized market. Do you have any idea how much it costs to set up a booth for a vendor? Do you understand what it costs to put on a show for such a small niche market??? Max sells the booths and if they are lucky they can cover the cost of the venue, the door is what pays his employees and feeds his family and the work that goes into the show has to pay his bills for months. I help with the RAP show and the reason it is cheaper to get in is because we are all volunteers and we put on the show and all the money goes to putting on the show so we can advertise more and get some of the general public to help offset the costs so you coral guys can get in for cheaper. This comes at a price because all these people want to look at the pretty colors and we tend to have to be patient to see everything because of the crowds.

Now my $30 I spent to get in the show for my wife and I was money well spent. I risked $100 in the raffle because of some great prizes, and ended up with some test kits from SeaChem, and I got 4 new pieces of coral for the reef. I have become very picky when it comes to coral and have so much I do not buy much any more as I would rather trade. My trades help me, but the dollars I used to spend do not filter down to all the coral guys. They need to sell coral to justify the cost associated with buying a booth and keeping grow out systems up and running all year, but their best customers go away faster than new ones come in as we all learn better ways to keep coral alive.

A tough business for sure and why I keep this a hobby instead of jumping in with a booth:)

I appreciate all you vendors who grow such nice colors, and I appreciate Max for putting on a show in March that is very family friendly. My kids have grown up with Captain Jack and the Mermaids and while I could do without my little ones look forward to this show every year!

$15 a person, or $30 for a couple is less than the cost of a frag, if you can not afford to spend that to come to Max can you afford a reef tank? For those of you who compare Max to RAP, remember we at RAP are volunteers and we do not feed our families off the show!

Thank you Max for putting on a show that this reefer enjoys and all you vendors for bringing the colors! I had a soccer game in Lancaster at 2pm on Sunday or I would have been hanging out with you all at the show.

The Tank is full my friends, not half empty as many of you preach!

price of entry is different for different people.

a single guy going to the show to scout for pieces he wants, really shouldn't bat an eye at the $15 (or $11 pre-sale) price. that's really nothing in the grand scheme of reef items.

however, for families, or people like me, who drag a +1, it starts adding up, especially since the +1 may not necessarily enjoy the show, and are probably nagging you to hurry up (luckily, not the case for me).

i don't remember how much RAP was last year, it was my first show, and in comparing the 2, price of entry never even factored in.

what I was bummed about, was that there didn't seem to be many drygood vendors at MAX. maybe it's just the expected size of turnout, that these vendors chose to not participate.

i'll be waiting for RAP to buy some ceramic bricks.
