I'm sure this is something most of us have considered. For you seasoned veterans, for the new booties, and everyone else sandwiched between:

What do you tell yourself to keep yourself from quitting?

I guess if you have never asked yourself this, there is basically no point in your response but I welcome you to share that information with us all.

I don't know what it is that exactly justifies staying in such a time consuming hobby. Not only does it suck up your time, (some of us) we rarely take a moment to just stop and enjoy our tank for what it is..

Oh. Did I forget to mention that our hobby resembles a drug addiction? In the sense that we are always looking for something more, always spending money, and always thinking about it (atleast for the crazies like me).

Be honest - I really want to dissect everyone's true reasons. No judgement here.. well, I can only speak for myself.

The reason I am asking today is that just earlier this evening I truly faced a time where I questioned it (more than usual).

I guess for me, it's the beauty of our reef tanks, the friends you meet along the way and the joy of seeing an absolutely stunning tank. These things weren't meant to be in our living rooms, but we are part of a generation that allows us the chance and ability to be an audience of something so vibrant, beautiful, and breath-taking.

OH.. and I forgot to mention: it's also because..

Some months back my full tank clash it was a really hard time all that money, hours changing water fixing rocks, testing.........

But I found some great guys in this hobby.. Thanks to them and there help with some free coral support and experience i made my way back in...
It helps to interact with other member's not just try to sale what you have and make money of your tank

I thought I was going to call it quits after I had two tanks at their prime crash due to bad batch of saltwater. But after looking at other peoples tanks and found motivation to keep it going. I just hold back on dumping money on new corals to add and let whatever I had survive the crash just grow out.

I'm too lazy to break down my tank and sell everything off. And when I clean the glass and do a water change I'm able to see everything again, which reminds me why I keep a tank in the first place.

Its real simple, its a hobby. Once it becomes a chore, then its time to step back and see if its worth it to you.

Everything you do in life, you need motivations. This hobby is the same thing. You can list the pros and cons out and go from there. I understand this hobby is expensive and time consuming, but if you do research well and set up everything right at the beginning, then you can enjoy the hobby in the long time without any trouble.

I find a lot of peace and relaxation in this hobby. I find it a productive way to focus when other things in life can be negatively consuming me. I have a very deep appreciation for the animals we keep in our tanks. For me, this is just one way I deal with stress and frustration. I channel all that energy into something positive and productive. Nobody that knows me understands it, but I'm a better person for it. I would seriously be worst off if I didn't have this hobby. That's just my reasoning for not quitting.

Interesting question "What do you tell yourself to keep yourself from quitting?" I used to hear this sentence "When are you going to shut down and sell everything?". I enjoy the hobby so I don't quit YET. If it gets in the way too much, I guess I will, but in the mean time I can handle it fine, so I am still in. Whatever we play, there will be always a trade off or sacrifice involves. I have been very lucky in finding good friends in reefing or work and that is to be a bonus for me.

Im always thinking about taking a break, been to busy to take care of the tank. honestly i would of done it awhile ago but i just cant seem to let go of my fish, i could sell my corals and other stuff in a heartbeat but not my fish. Its hard enough to keep some alive and once you've had them for years.. just cant do it. Especially when you walk up and all my fish are swimming near the corner waiting for food, basically eat out of my hands. I think ill never lose interest in this hobby love it to much with or without a tank.
