Not everyone have a scale on hand, unless you’re dealing drugs. 😂
The only drugs this scale has ever weighed is interceptor and that was back in the early days when we were trying to figure out the best dosages that were both effective and wouldn’t kill things we didn’t want killed.

I think should be by weight since most of the time coral encrusted first before grow up/out. So by weight should let you know whether the coral grew or not.
What do you guys think?

Oh I was just joking about measuring coral girth. The weight aspect is going a bit extreme for a local grow out competition. I know people are competitive in nature but everyone that is getting uppity about variances and what not should remember that we are just trying to have some fun as a community.

I wish we were trying to win a new 1,000 gallon Lee Mar system w/ 10x new G5 Pro Radions, MP40QDs, and a bubble king skimmer. Since we are not, the investment/effort required to participate or manage the grow out competition is going to be proportional to the prize (diminishing returns!). Keep it simple.

My Joleen is starting to color up already!

2020 SPS grow out update.
Updated measurements. Most contestants’ measurements for Start and for May were consistent, some were inconsistent. Please see notes below.
Also please note that measurements I post are for reference only. Let me know if their are inaccuracies, but for the most part the start measurement is the most important and needs to be confirmed accurate early on.

1) how should we deal with coral growth encrusting at the bottom? Something to think about As it leads to some measuring challenges as the blues the start point. Let’s have a discussion.
2) please measure in Cm moving forward
3) Jimbird, please use a different ruler and remeasure ASAP. You don’t have any usable measurements.
4) Thirst, you are missing May measurement
5) Bysochin, please confirm .2cm growth. Your initial and March measurements photos are not exact, please confirm your start measurement.
6) Cymaster007, please confirm .2cm growth. Your initial and March measurements photos are not exact, please confirm your start measurement
7) titanWerx - your photo is showing negative growth, please confirm.

Ah not negative growth, this has to do with the angle of the shot I think, (this is going to be problem)more encrusting at the base but a very slow growth for sure. I will try to be more consistent with the angles and measurements

I think this is becoming way too complicated. With the ruler, our eyes, and votes we can figure out the winner. We it looks like this month was agreed to give ppl a wash on. A ruler is a ruler. Nothing special one from the other. This isn’t that serious guys.

Did you look at jimbirds ruler? Also the important part is to get a good start measurement. If we understate the start measurement then we could “achieve” some phenomenal growth. We understand this is for fun, but even games need some basis and rules. Besides I think people are interested in proving themselves and sharing with our community the benefits of what we do. At least that was my thought.

I can see the lines on his ruler, but he already bought one, so this is a non-issue now. Most of the guys here have been here for a long time and grown corals for a long time. There is no magic tricks or lights and mirrors to trick you regarding growth. There will be a clear winner. I personally don't know you and I'm not trying to call you out, but this is not contributing to the contest. I don't think anyone has such a need to prove themselves, as stated before a lot of ppl have been on here for a long time and have grown coral for a long time. The most growth anyone will get is about an inch a month (if everything is where it needs to be). Lets just not over complicate stuff.

Jose, I’m not trying to be difficult or make up rules. But let’s get the facts straight. From the beginning everyone agreed to follow Bobs rule, but people like your self were dismissive without calling for a vote. I understand you’ve been doing this for a long time and maybe that’s the culture of us reefers, and that’s fine, it’s not a big deal for me to roll with the punches. Your the one that asked me to update the group so not sure why your upset. I’m was only doing this because you had asked and some people seemed to like it. I understand that you don’t appreciate my contribution, no hard feelings. Also bob set out the rules in the beginning and I thought we were agreeing to stick to that, but you seem to be dismissive of the rules set by bob and continue to be dismissive as to How to measure and how to when. You also allowed someone to restart without a vote and necessitated a vote that upset some people. How can we allow some people to restart and not others? Also for jimbird you see his ruler, it missing the bottom ticks. I don’t personally care what he uses, it’s more a courtesy for him since he will need a sound basis to measure against. My hope was to offer a fun up to date look at progress and as some people were asking if we were measuring with metric or not. In my mind I thought I was doing a service that we were going to guess at at end, but in real time and allowing people to take measurements that wouldn’t disqualify them at the end. It’s all good brother, I’m content with just playing this game with you guys. I don’t want to make waves or be accused of complicating things.

I’m not upset at all. This just seems unnecessary. At this juncture I think it’s best you just leave it up to bob and myself. If you would like to leave the competition, we understand. I’ll be happy to refund you for your $5 in the pot.
