I would say that you haven't been in the hobby long enough my friend. We all have done something stupid in the hobby or had something major go wrong. Good planning, built in redundancies, and patience mitigate problems. Luck has very little to do with it, although sometimes it does help. :)
Almost 2 years in the hobby.
im serious I havet done anything stypid lol okay okay the stupidest thing I have dont is buy live stock from LFS.

Lol but i fixed it, i buy it from Wairhouse's. for 3 times or even more cheaper lol hahahah.

Stupidest thing is sticking in my hands to my tank right after applying suntan and lotion :(. Lots of fish were not happy at the time.

I wonder if it's worse to sanitize then put them in or just put your stank hands in????

I usually just use hot water and in I go.

We got it the first time Armen, you have access to the wholesaler. We are very impressed! When I grow up I want to be just like Armen. LoL.

I didn't realize how stupid I've been, I buy exclusively from LFS. Man, we sure are stupid for that.

C'mon man, don't rub it in brother. We are happy that you have access, we know you get killer pricing when the rest of us have to pay full retail. That's nothing you want to brag about unless you want us to come after you with torches and pitch forks! Your call!

GET EM' GUYS!

I think it's worse to sanitize. I just rinse in hot water now as well, or wear non-powdered gloves. Another stupid mistake I made was to wear powdered gloves and I almost lost all my fish then too!

theres a lot of guys I know who have been reefing 5+ years without incident. its no big deal. sometimes its luck... like its better to be lucky than good. Other times guys dont push the envelope and stay with a small tank and soft coral, hardy fish and think they're hardcore. But usually its cause guys look at their tank everyday and have some help/support with the upkeep...

theres lots of wholesalers that sell to the public. even my gardner once in a while goes down to the airport and "picks up nice things." Im preaching to you that LFS have an important role in the hobby... as in everybody starts there. So undermining them doesnt help...

Couldn't agree more. I personally couldn't care less if you go to the wholesalers. And implying that anybody who does buy from their LFS is stupid is absolutely ludicrous, and an insult to every reefer or LFS, IMHO. The advantage of going to an LFS has over wholesalers is a good LFS will make things work if there is a problem with your livestock. With a wholesaler, you have no recourse when that livestock ends up dead. Also, a good LFS can and will hold a fish for you. No wholesaler will do that.
You may save $$$ up front, but in the long run, it can cost you more(not always, but sometimes)
Plus, I have learned that when a consumer gains access to the wholesalers, that hurts the LFS's business. Our LFS are there for a reason. Support them...

Agree, I rinse with hot water alone before going into tank, no chems at all...

1 of the bigger mistake out of many. Making changes right before the lights go out and waking up to a cloudy tank.

I ran a tubing from the outside line to my skimmer to pull in fresh air. During treatment with Cupramine and PraziPro, I turned the skimmer off. This created a back siphon since I guess my tube was long enought to create suction somehow.

Overnight, my ATO topped off about 3-5 gallons of KALK water. 80% fishes dead...although my softy tank corals survived.

Lesson learn to not make big changes before lights out or anytime you can't monitor for a good hour or so.
