So looks like after a 4 year break, I'm starting to get the itch again. I used to have a 50g tank with a protein skimmer on it and no sump and it did just fine. But now I'm being told that having a sump is the way to go. Was told by one person that sumps are a pain in the a$$, and told that there easy to deal with by another. Wanted to get some more opinions.

Thanks

Kev

sump = more water volume more stable. more space to place skimmer reactors and return.
all in one = no sump no leak compact easy to move.
i prefer a sump i use to be paranoid with a hole in my tank but now i dont think i can run a tank without a sump. so much more possibilities. and more space.

sump or chump...

eventully you will need do plumbing for a chiller, fluidized reactor, UV, skimmer, etc. a sump is really no different.

so might as well plumb a sump and take it to the next level.

I'm lookin to start a 55-60g tank don't want to go past 60g. But nervous about adding a sump, I've never done one before, thinking it may be a harder to maintain??

If you don't get a sump you will want to stab yourself with a pencil in the eye. So important on that size of a tank. Why would you want to see all those wires inside your tank??? Heater, skimmer out let inlet? Imagine a skimmer over flow all over the back of your tank. Things hanging on your tank makes it more of something for fresh water people.

I had a sumpless tank once....it was messy and I had alot of obstructions inside my scape.

Only thing that should be in the tank besides the obvious is your power heads. And even powerheads look ugly.

Yep... Sump will make life easier... put all the goodies in the sump, has more volume so system is more stable, and maintenance is actually a lot easier.

I used to have a 50 gallon reef tank with a sump, took about a five year break and about 8 months ago setup a nano cube 28. The tank itself being smaller fits better in our house but I sure do miss the sump. The all in one chambers are just so tight to work with. Maintenance was soo much easier with the sump.

This hobby leads you to the pinnacle. If it's a choice a sump is beneficial by far.

...put a Mantis shrimp in there lol...
well then make sure to cover the overflow, and use a filter sock or put the mantis in a separate comparment, because when a fish accidently goes down the drain...

mr. mantis won't even tip you for the free delivery

When using a sump and doing the 10% weekly water change, should that 10% include the volume of the sump?
