Walked into the room with the tank today and immediately got that sinking feeling. That terrible feeling of what the heck happened and everything is all dead. Somehow the GFCI tripped and there was no power to the tank for 36-48 hours, I'm estimating.

First thing I saw was my purple tang laying on the bottom, then I saw the rest of the carnage once I turned the power back on.

All my fish were dead, and 90% of my SPS. It seems as if my chalices, LPS, and Zoas are going to make it.

This is a sucky feeling. I'm not sure if I'm going to continue or just sell everything off. Most of this stuff I've been growing for 2 years and was finally starting to take off.

Just had to vent.

Wow dude, that really sucks to hear. I honestly don't know what I would do in that situation either. All the time and effort not to mention money down the crapper.
I think once you get hooked you can't get by without a tank, it becomes a part of you and you a part of it.
No matter what you decide I wish you luck.

That sucks, sorry to hear that. Happened to me before something wiped out all my fishes, pretty depressing because I had a 4 year old blue damsel I had from my first saltwater setup die. I thought about quitting but ive always had an interest for fish since I was like 8.. You should stay in the hobby, its to hard to give up. Best of luck!

I wasn't around. The tank itself is rock solid and everything monitored by the Apex. Don't have a battery backup for it so it can't tell me the power is out. Did a couple water changes. Lost most of the SPS and all the fish. Everything else seems to be ok but I'm still depressed over my SPS.

Right now just waiting for everything to stabilize before I decide what to do.

This happens to all of us at one time or another.

A simple $15 device would have saved your entire tank.

Sorry that this info had to come after the fact:

If nothing else I hope others see this post and react (contingency planning is important)

sorry to hear. something similar happened to me, about a month ago. my building lost power & i had a late day at work. came home around midnight, to find all my tank buddies stiff. my purple, convict & lavender tangs dead, along with a pyramid & my first successful copper band butterfly fish. i really wanted to toss the thing in the trash. after thinking it thru, i have had way to much fun & joy with this hobby, to give up so easily. i hope you feel the same way & continue in the hobby.

that sucks man! hang in there,... it does happen to all of us... something will always fail... and its hard to have everything fail-proof... the good thing is that you still have your entire set-up, and SPS grow...

That sucks.. sorry to hear. Since you have an apex, you really should get a battery backup going to power the adapter to your apex, your router, and your modem, to ensure it's able to send out the notification that the EB8 lost power.. it's one of the only reasons we got an Apex, and is good peace of mind.

I posted this failed circuit alarm back on reefcentral in 2011, but don't think I ever posted it here.. http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2105476

Incase it helps anyone else, I'll quote my post below..

With all the recent threads about people losing livestock to power outages.. we went out and bought a few generators.. then realized that they won't do us any good if we don't realize in time that the power is out.. For example.. it's been getting into the 30's here at night.. and if the power was to go out while we were asleep at say 1am.. by the time we wake up at 8am or 9am.. it may be too late with how fast the temperature will drop..

With that being said.. I ordered one of these.. Model number# FCA2-05

It's louder than crap.. and has helped alert us a couple times when we were all the way on the opposite side of the house.

PS. If you decide to stay, I'd be willing to donate some SPS frags to you to get you back online.. I'm sure others here would do the same. :)

Sorry to hear about your lose. I went through the same thing a few years ago but mine was self inflicted. I had the same reaction at first, wanted to sell everything and break down. I waited a while and let things cool before I make any decisions and ended up not selling and eventually upgraded. Take your time and let the sting of the lose pass before you make any decisions but that is just my opinion.
